Sabres vs. Avalanche: 10/29/23 – Game Reactions/Recap

With the Bills having played the Thursday night game, the Sabres took the usual 1:00 Sunday time slot with a big game against the Avs at home in the red and black. I didn’t have much faith in Buffalo today but they shocked me with their best win of the year, winning 4-0 in a dominant performance.

JJ Peterka put the Sabres on the board first with a nice second effort getting his own rebound in transition with 9:28 left in the first period to get the 1-0 start to the game. Solid start to the game for the Sabres. After a few big saves by UPL to start the period, it was huge to get the lead first against a really solid Colorado team.

Casey Mittelstadt came streaking up the ice on a two on one and made it 2-0 Sabres just 1:39 into the second period with a nice shot that beat Georgiev. The Sabres picked up a 3-0 lead with 11:44 left in the second period with Tyson Jost ripping a shot right between the circles on a beautiful backhand pass from Alex Tuch.

Buffalo completely iced off the game with Dahlin scoring on the empty net from the corner of the opposite end of the ice with 3:08 left in the game, making it 4-0.

FINAL: Sabres 4, Avalanche 0

Easily the best game of the season for the Sabres, especially on the defensive end of the ice. A lot to love here. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen got his first NHL shutout, making 23 saves and the defense in front of him really impressed me with 21 blocked shots. Buffalo really did a great job at limiting the offensive chances for the Avalanche today. We outshot them 29-23 and outplayed Colorado significantly, by an expected goal rate of 3.49-2.06.

“We just feel evil in the jerseys. I don’t know what it is, but we love it”
