I pretty much broke even on the NHL again yesterday, the second day in a row, going 4-2 to lose 0.16 units with both losses coming from betting against my Sabres. Tonight we have a nine game slate. Let’s get some wins!
Penguins vs. Ducks (7:00)
This is an interesting matchup that on paper doesn’t look that great. I broke it down in depth in my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I’d expect the Penguins to win in a get right spot as they’ve only won one game in their last five while being the better team in several of those. That said, especially with the Ducks on a three-game winning streak, in no way do I think Pittsburgh is worth betting on with the moneyline priced all the way up at -250 and the regulation line at -170, so I’ll stay off the side in this matchup. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Bruins vs. Panthers (7:00)
Tonight we have a rematch of the first round of the playoffs last year where the #8 ranked Florida Panthers took down the record-breaking President’s Trophy winning Bruins in overtime of Game 7 on the way to shocking the hockey world and becoming the Eastern Conference Champions. Both of these teams have played solid hockey to start the year, but I don’t see the result of that series happening here and I expect the B’s to get their revenge at home for that series loss. I’ll take them for a unit.
Lightning vs. Kraken (7:00)
I’d expect this to be a fun game. The Lightning have looked great recently, especially at home. Their goalie Jonas Johansson, who’s had the starting job so far this season with Vazilevskiy out, has been quite good, coming into tonight’s game on back to back shutouts against the Sharks and the Hurricanes, without a loss in regulation in their last six games. I like Tampa to win at home and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d slightly lean the over but not enough to bet it.
Flyers vs. Hurricanes (7:00)
These teams seem to have gone back to their expectations. The Canes are coming in off back to back wins while the Ducks just shit pumped the Flyers 7-4 and Philly only has one win in their last four games. I’d expect the Hurricanes to win on the road here and I’ll lay the juice on Carolina for half a unit.
Islanders vs. Red Wings (7:30)
After a really hot start to the season, the Red Wings are on a bit of a slump coming into today’s game on a three-game losing streak. The Isles are exactly what I expected of them, a good defensive team that doesn’t get much going on offense. I’d lean Detroit wins on the road here but not enough to bet them, so I’ll stay off the side in this game. I’d lean the under with the goaltending matchup of Husso vs. Sorokin, but at 5.5, I don’t see enough value in betting it, and I’m not paying up to the 6.
Jets vs. Rangers (7:30)
Not the greatest matchup to look at here but I think this could be a fun and competitive game. I’d lean the Rangers win this one, but not enough to bet them on the road. I do like the under a lot though with Shesterkin vs. Hellebuyck in goal. I’ll take the under 6 (make sure to shop this and get the 6 instead of the 5.5) for half a unit.
Stars vs. Blue Jackets (8:00)
This is the biggest mismatch on the slate. Dallas should win this one easily at home against a pretty poor Blue Jackets team that are on a three-game losing streak against shitty opponents. Stars win this one easily to bounce back from their 4-1 loss to the Leafs on Thursday. The moneyline at -285 is way too expensive but I’ll take the Stars in regulation for a unit.
Coyotes vs. Blackhawks (10:00)
This isn’t a good matchup. The Yotes are a pain in the ass team to face while the Blackhawks, even with Bedard, are a pretty bad team. They did shock me on Friday night though, giving the Golden Knights their first loss since winning the Stanley Cup with a 4-3 overtime win on the road in Vegas. I’d lean Arizona wins this game at home but I don’t think they’re worth betting on at -190. Way too expensive, and I’m not limiting myself to 60 minutes on them. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet on it.
Golden Knights vs. Canadiens (10:00)
The Golden Knights bounced back from their first loss of the season when they lost in overtime to the Blackhawks with a nice 4-3 shootout win on the road against the Kings to cap off Saturday night with a win for me, after after blowing their lead late in regulation. The Habs are on a nice little stretch here with four wins in their last four games, but no shot they’re betting Vegas at the Fortress tonight.
