Sabres @ Hurricanes: 11/7/23 – Game Reactions/Recap

I’ve had stuff going on for each of the last three Sabres games and haven’t been able to blog them, but I’m back to just chilling at home tonight so I had to blog tonight’s game as the Sabres went to Carolina to take on the Canes, looking for our first win on the road in Carolina since 2016. What a run on sentence that was. That streak didn’t end, as we lost 3-2 in overtime in a pretty fun game.

Tony Deangelo scored his first goal of the year, making it 1-0 Carolina on the power play 12:43 into the first period as he ripped a perfectly placed wrist shot on UPL from right in front of the blue line after a missed clearing attempt by Jordan Greenway. Pretty fun first period, that was pretty evenly matched and Luukkonen was very good in goal, making nine saves to keep the Sabres in it.

Alex Tuch tied the game up just 2:51 into the second period on a really quick play, stealing the puck away right in front of the net from Seth Jarvis and tapping it in the net past Anti Raanta to make it a 1-1 game. The Sabres couldn’t stay out of the box, but it was good to see them kill them all off and actually get some offensive chances.

With 12:06 left in regulation in a Skjei broke the tie after a back and forth start of the third period, on a great goal with the whole Carolina team passing the puck around so clean. The Sabres tied it up again pretty quickly though. With 10:37 left, Rasmus Dahlin on his own nice little move tossing the puck off the boards around the Canes defense on the zone entry, scoring by himself to make it 2-2. Solid third period that was fun to watch.

In overtime after some great defensive play by Owen Power to prevent a goal, the Canes got the puck back against the winded Sabres and Marty Necas scored the game winner 1:30 into overtime.

FINAL: Sabres 2, Hurricanes 3

Not a horrible game, as we still picked up a point. I didn’t really expect to win this one but as loser-ish as this sounds, it was good to see the Sabres compete tonight. We got outshot 27-22 and were slightly outplayed, by an expected goal rate of 3-2.49. Carolina beat us out on scoring chances 19-12.

Back in action again on Friday night at home against the Wild.
