Tonight the Sabres put up a good effort on the road in Winnipeg but ended up losing 3-2, unable to finish the comeback.
We started the game with a pretty good first period that ended scoreless and was played very evenly yet quite slow, with the Sabres getting outshot 7-6.
The Jets opened the scoring in transition with a nicely placed shot by Cole Perfetti that beat Comrie 2:12 into the period to give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead. It didn’t take long for them to make it 2-0. With sloppy transition play and Appleton drove to the mixer for an easy tip in on a pass from Nino Niederreitter 4:33 into the period. The Sabres answered right back though 33 seconds later as Alex Tuch beat Hellebuyck to put Buffalo back within one. The Jets took the two goal lead back though with 11:48 left in the period, on a very long range shot from Nikolaj Ehlers that Comrie never saw coming, making it a 3-1 game. Fun period with both teams getting some good scoring chances. The Sabres made a few mistakes defensively that led to goals for the Jets that they have to clean up as they gave up three goals on four shots. We had a few good chances offensively, outshooting Winnipeg 10-4.
The Sabres came flying to start the third and just a minute in, JJ Peterka got in behind the Jets defense after a beautiful blue line to blue line pass from Dahlin and made it a one goal game once again. After the Jets wasted away a late power play late that would’ve been the dagger if the they had scored on it, the Sabres had a phenomenal rush at the end of the game to try to tie up on 6 on 5, but they couldn’t pull it off. Really great third period in the losing effort.
FINAL: Sabres 2, Jets 3
Solid game for Buffalo despite us losing. We outshot the Jets 27-18, out-chanced the Jets 22-19 and outplayed them by an expected goal rate of 3.32-2. We were solid on the penalty kill, not allowing a goal on the four Winnipeg power plays. The problems tonight were the offense taking a bit to get the pace going early and then getting some bad breaks that led to Jets goals. That’s just puck luck at that point.
Back at it on Sunday night against Bedard and the Blackhawks.
Go Sabres.
