I have absolutely loved this first season of the Golden Bachelor. Gerry captured the hearts of America and all of the ladies this season changed the status quo of the girls we’ve gotten used to seeing on The Bachelor, where the idea of falling love over the last five to ten years have fallen back to being more so about getting Instagram and TikTok followers and getting famous. This season flipped the franchise on it’s head and I’ve absolutely love it. Last night we had the season finale with Gerry down to his last two ladies, Theresa and Leslie. Today I finish up the finale and recap the end of this fantastic season.
The first difference here compared to the normal Bachelor, obviously instead of the final two meeting the lead’s parents, Leslie and Theresa will be meeting Gerry’s two daughters and his two granddaughters.
First up to meet Gerry’s family is Theresa. Gerry’s kids could see them being a great match if he ends up proposing to her, but it is a little bit weird to me that he does say that at this point he still needs to focus on TWO women. Obviously we know that is the case, but it’s a little weird to me that they’re so openly referencing that Leslie’s still there this late in the process. Honestly though, that’s probably a good thing. Afterwards Gerry and Theresa have their final date. The connect more on their late spouses and how those relationships changed who each of them are as a person. Theresa tells Gerry that she’s all in and that even though Leslie is still there and it concerns her, if Gerry choses Theresa at the end of this because he wants to choose her, she’s all in and would accept the final rose and proposal.
Next up, Gerry’s family meets Leslie. It goes really well, but Gerry seems a little bit off from his normal self and a little bit disconnected. Leslie notices that too, which she says in her confessional. When they start their date, Leslie tells Gerry that he didn’t seem like his normal self and he apologizes that he’s been in his own head in trying to figure out between her and Theresa. She gifts him a little book with their memories together and tells him how in love with him she is. Without even saying anything, you can just see that Gerry made his decision already and he tells her to be happy, and before he leaves she asks him if he had anything that he had to say to her. He replies just that he has the hardest decision he thought possible. After she cries in her room and he cries in the hallway, he goes back to talk to her. He says that he does have something to tell her and that he has already made his decision, in that he fell in love with Theresa and was going to go that way. She says that everything he told her the other night during their fantasy suite was a lie. She says that she knew something was off during the day, but that it wasn’t “we” but him that was off. She breaks down crying and that he didn’t choose her when it felt like he previously did. Pretty heartbreaking to watch and she does make the great point that it’s better now than waiting until the final rose for it to end.
Back to the LA studio with Leslie on the hot seat talking about how heartbroken she was and how difficult it was to just watch back and see again how she wasn’t chosen. Gerry joins Leslie to talk. She tells him that after her overnight date, even though she knew he still had his last date with Theresa, but she thought at that point he just had to go through the process and wasn’t worried at all, because in her head at that point, he had already chosen her. She’s the perfect candidate to be the Golden Bachelorette, and would may my choice. I know Joan and Faith were also rumored for it, but I hope its Leslie.
Onto the final rose ceremony. Gerry freaks Theresa out, telling her that it isn’t that he can’t live with her, he can’t live without her. He gets on one knee, proposes and then gives her the new golden final rose.
This was such an awesome season that was such a fantastic switch from the regular Bachelor and Bachelorette series. It truly went back to the roots of the franchise and was all about truly finding love.
On January 4th, we’ll have The Golden Wedding, live on ABC as Gerry and Theresa get married and then Joey’s season of The Bachelor begins on January 22nd.
