I wasn’t expecting much out of tonight’s trip to Carolina for the Sabres, where we haven’t won since 2016, and I was right, as we got embarrassed in a 6-2 loss, completely dominated on both ends of the ice.
I didn’t blog Thursday night’s game since I had too much stuff going on, but it was a pretty pathetic loss, losing 6-4 in St. Louis, while outshooting the Blues 46-20, with bad defense and poor goaltending by UPL just a game after he put on an all star looking performance against the Rags on Monday.
The Canes got the first goal of the game with 4:34 to go in the first period, with Sebastian Aho making a nice move around Cozens and ripping it past Comrie to give Carolina a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later with 3:24 left to go in the first, the Canes made it 2-0 quickly with Jack Drury jumping on a rebound to beat Comrie. Buffalo’s defense broke down multiple times in that period, which led to both Carolina goals. The Sabres got a few decent chances to score, but we were outplayed in that period, getting outshot 14-8.
In the second period it didn’t take long for the Canes to score, with Aho getting his second goal of the night just 1:06 into the period, just 18 seconds into a power play, extending the lead to 3-0. Stefan Noesen made it 4-0 Carolina with 5:48 left in the second, again chasing down a rebound after the Sabres gave up a lousy rush in transition. The Sabres defense looked like complete dogshit on the penalty kill, with Teuvo Teravainen placing a shot nicely off a cross ice pass, making it a 5-0 game with 1:56 left in the second period. What an embarrassment. Pathetic period for Buffalo, horrendous play on both ends of the ice.
Casey Mittelstadt broke the shutout with the Sabres first goal of the night 4:08 into the third period on a quick shot. Good to not get shut out I guess, but it really doesn’t matter. Brady Skjei padded the score even more for Carolina, shooting right off the face off win, shorthanded to make it a 6-1 game with 11:55 left in the embarrassment. With 10:36 left, Jost threw the puck in the net to make it 6-2 after a missed sliding poke check by Kochetkov.
FINAL: Sabres 2, Hurricanes 6
Another pathetic loss. Carolina was free money tonight. The Sabres were completely dominated on both ends of the ice. We got outshot 36-23, got out chanced 19-12, and dominated by an expected goal rate of 3.99-1.99. Really nothing good to take out of this one, just gotta move on to tomorrow. This team stinks.
Back at it tomorrow night at home against the Preds.
