Slight loss but pretty close to a breakeven night for me on the NHL yesterday, going 5-6-1 to lose 0.6 units on the big slate. Today we have a decent five game slate, let’s win here.
Blackhawks vs. Canucks (3:00)
Pretty lousy game to start off the day. The Canucks have been a solid team this season, really impressing me with their play on both ends of the ice. Yesterday afternoon they had a four game win streak come to an end in Minnesota, losing 2-1 in a shootout. The Blackhawks have been horrible this season. They return home today on a three game losing streak after getting trounced in. a 7-1 loss in Seattle on Thursday night. I like the Canucks to bounce back here pretty easily from yesterday’s loss and I will take them in regulation for a unit. I’d slightly lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Hurricanes vs. Capitals (6:00)
This is a pretty decent Metro Division matchup tonight. Although the Canes have been disappointing this season, they have played better lately and have picked up at least a point in their last three games, coming off a 6-5 overtime loss to the Predators at home on Friday night (my under never stood a chance in that game). The Capitals are in a bit of a slump, with just two wins in their last seven games. These teams play completely different styles of hockey, with the Caps relying on their good defense and Carolina relying on offense. I think the Hurricanes are the better team here and should win tonight at home, but the price is so inflated at -230. This should be around a -150 line to me, so I will stay off the side completely. I actually see some solid value on the Washington side, but not enough for me to bet them. I’d slightly lean the under, but at 5.5, there’s no point in betting that either. I’ll stay off this game completely.
Devils vs. Ducks (7:00)
Big mismatch here. The Devils have played really well. Coming off a dominant 6-3 win in Columbus last night (triple winner for me), they have eight wins in their last ten games. Jersey has one of the best offenses in the league. The Ducks are struggling immensely on both ends of the ice, and come into tonight’s game on a five game losing streak with just one win in their last 14 games, which they needed a shootout to get. I like the Devils to win here tonight even in the second half of a back to back. I’ll take them in regulation and their team total over 3.5 for a unit each. I’d lean the over here, but I’d rather just stick to the Jersey side of things.
Avalanche vs. Sharks (8:00)
The Avs are a really solid team but they’ve continued to struggle this year. They’re in the second half of a back to back tonight, coming off a 6-2 loss in Winnipeg last night. The Sharks looked like the worst team in NHL history to start the season, but that’s clearly not the case anymore as they keep playing close, competitive games. They’re coming off a 1-0 shutout loss in Arizona on Friday, but have a 6-3-2 record in their last eleven games with six wins in their last nine games. They’re not an easy win when you bet against them every night. In the first game between these teams in San Jose, the Avs needed a shootout for a 2-1 win. Obviously Colorado’s the way better team in this matchup, but in no way am I laying -290 here and I don’t like this matchup enough to take them in regulation. I do like the over in this game though, and I’ll buy it down to 6 and take it for half a unit.
Golden Knights vs. Senators (8:00)
I love this spot for Vegas. The Golden Knights had their nine game point streak and four game win streak come to an end on Friday night, losing 5-2 to my Buffalo Sabres at home. The Knights have been fantastic this year, leading the NHL as they defend the Cup, playing great on both ends of the ice. The Sens have struggled immensely. Coming off a 5-4 loss in Dallas on Friday (double winner for me) where they blew an early 3-1 lead and a then a 4-2 lead, they’re on a three game losing streak. I really like Vegas to bounce back tonight with a win at home in the Fortress and I’ll take them for 1.5 units. I’d slightly lean the over, but not enough to bet them.
