NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/5/24

On last night’s big NHL slate, I pretty much broke even with a few dollars of profit, going 5-5 with two of those losses coming in shootouts. Tonight we have just a three game slate before a big weekend. Let’s go!

Devils vs. Blackhawks (7:00)

Gigantic mismatch to get the night started. The Devils currently sit on the outside looking in on a Wild Card spot in the East but they’ve played solid hockey as of late. Coming off a 6-3 win in DC on Wednesday, Jersey’s now won four of their last five games and have gone 12-5-1 in their last 18 games. They’ve played great offensively, but have struggled defensively at times. The Blackhawks on the other hand, who are in the second half of a back to back tonight after a 4-1 loss to the Rangers in New York, have been awful. They’re the second worst team in the NHL behind the Sharks, and they’re currently on a four game losing streak with just two wins in their last twelve games. Chicago’s been awful on both ends of the ice. In the first game between these teams was a 4-2 win for the Devils in Chicago and I’d expect an even easier win for them tonight at home. The books do too as the line on this game is pricey at -425. I’ll take the Devils puck line and their team total over 4 for a unit each.

Capitals vs. Hurricanes (7:00)

Decent Metro Division matchup and despite these teams being on opposite ends of the standings, they’re only separated by four points. The Hurricanes have been really hot lately, coming into tonight’s game on a four game win streak after a 6-1 win on the road in New York. They have just one regulation loss in their last eleven games with a 7-1-3 record in that span to sit second in the division. Statistically they’ve been solid on both ends of the ice. The Caps are in a slump right now, coming off a 6-3 loss to the Devils at home on Wednesday, they only have one win in their last six games. The first game between these teams in Carolina was tight, with the Capitals grinding it out for a 2-1 win on the road in a shootout. I’d lean the Canes tie it up and the under, but Not enough to bet on either. I’ll stay off this game. Should be a solid one to watch.

Ducks vs. Jets (10:00)

Big mismatch. The Jets came through big for me last night, cashing in my two unit play on them to beat the Sharks in regulation with their fourth win in a row on the back of Gabe Vilardi’s power play goal in the third period and Connor Hellebuyck’s 29 save night. They’ve picked up at least a point in each of their last ten games with an 12-1-2 record in their last 15 games. The Jets have been fantastic, a point behind the Avs for first place in the Western Conference, playing great hockey on both ends of the ice. The Ducks have been terrible. They forced overtime against the Leafs on Wednesday, losing my bet since I had Toronto in regulation, but this team stinks and they’re on a three game losing streak. They’re only leading the Sharks in the Pacific and have just four wins in their last 22 games, playing terribly on both ends of the ice. With the Jets on the road in the second half of a back to back, we’re getting a solid price on them tonight. I’ll take Winnipeg for half a unit. I’d slightly lean the under, but not enough to bet it.
