NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/7/24

Losing night for me yesterday on the NHL, going 6-6 but losing 2.53 units. Not what we wanted. Today we have a solid four game slate, let’s win it back!

Capitals vs. Kings (3:00)

Pretty decent cross conference game to get the day started with two decent teams both in slumps right now. The Capitals are in a pretty big slump right now, yet are still just a few points back from a Wild Card spot. Coming off a 6-2 loss at home to the Hurricanes on Friday, they’ve only gotten one win in their last seven games. All season while their offense has struggled, their defense has been very good. The problem now though is their defensive play has dropped off as well. The Kings are still holding onto their third place spot in the Pacific, but coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Red Wings at home on Thursday night (big swing for me), they’re on a four game losing streak, with just four wins in their last twelve games. Statistically LA’s been really solid on both ends of the ice. The Caps won the first game between these teams 2-1 on the road. I think the Kings are the better team here and I like them to tie up the season series with a win of their own on the road and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet on it.

Blackhawks vs. Flames (3:00)

Pretty lousy matchup here. The Blackhawks have been horrible this season, easily the second worst team in the NHL behind just the Sharks and they got significantly worse after their 4-2 loss in New Jersey on Friday night, as first overall pick and Blackhawks leading scorer Connor Bedard got placed on the IR with a broken jaw. Chicago’s on a five game losing streak with only two wins in their last 13 games. They’ve been brutal on both ends of the ice. The Flames are in the second half of a back to back, coming off a 3-2 loss last night in Philly. They’ve played well recently though with six wins in their last nine games. Statistically they haven’t been all that great, but they’re far better than Calgary is. I was already betting regularly against Chicago but now without Bedard, they’re an even easier bet. Even in the second half of a back to back, I like Calgary to win here on the road quite a bit. I’ll take them in regulation for 2 units. I’d lean the under, but not enough to bet on it.

Coyotes vs. Jets (7:00)

This is a decent matchup in the Central. The Jets have been fantastic this season, now leading the Western Conference as they come into tonight’s game on an impressive five game win streak and eleven game point streak with a 13-1-2 record in their last 16 games, playing really solid hockey on both ends of the ice. The Coyotes, coming off two home losses in a row after a 5-1 loss to the Isles on Thursday, have been pretty decent this season. They have a winning record, especially at home in the Mullett. They’ve over exceeded a lot of people’s expectations this year, especially defensively, as they’re in the mix for the Wild Card spots in the West. Winnipeg won both previous games between these teams, winning 5-3 on the road and then 5-2 at home. I like them to win again tonight on the road and I’ll take them for a unit. Even though both previous games hit the over, I’d slightly lean the under here, but not quite enough to bet it.

Ducks vs. Red Wings (8:00)

Kind of a lousy game to close out the night. The Ducks have struggled on both ends of the ice this season, the second worst team in the Pacific Division behind San Jose. They’re coming into tonight on a four game losing streak with only four wins in their last  23 games. The Red Wings seem to have gotten out of their losing run with three wins in their last four games, coming off a 4-3 shootout win in LA on Thursday. They’ve been fantastic offensively, but have struggled on the back end big time, pretty much needing at least four goals to win every game they play. Anaheim won the first game between these teams 4-3 on the road. I’d expect Detroit to answer back with a win tonight in Anaheim. The play I like better though on them is their team total, not having to worry about the defense giving up too many goals to an inferior team. I’ll take the Red Wings team total over 3.5 for a unit. I’d absolutely lean the over in this game, but I’ll just stick to the Detroit side of it.
