NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/14/24

I took a slight loss on yesterday’s huge NHL slate, going 7-7 to lose 0.78 units. Not awful. Today we have just two games for this Sunday slate before another big slate tomorrow. Let’s win that back!

Rangers vs. Capitals (1:00)

These Metro Division teams are in the second half of a back to back after they played in Washington yesterday afternoon to start off the big slate, with the Caps getting a 3-2 win at home in a game they were outshot 27-21 and outplayed by an expected goal rate of 4.12-3, starting my day off with a loss. This will be the final regular season matchup between them after they split their first two games, with the home team winning each game by four goals, a 4-0 shutout win for the Caps on December 9th and a 5-1 win for the Rags to answer back on December 27th. The Caps are still in the Wild Card mix in the East, although yesterday’s win was just their third in their last ten games. They’ve been good defensively but have really struggled to score this year. The Rangers lead the Metro, a point ahead of Carolina, but they’re in their biggest slump of the season right now. After yesterday afternoon’s loss, they’re on a four game losing streak with only two wins in their last eight games. New York’s the way better team here on both ends of the ice, and I like them to tie up the season series today to end their losing streak. The problem is with them at home, the price on this game is a lot higher than it was yesterday. I’ll take them in regulation for 1.5 units. I like the under too, and I’ll take the under 6 here for half a unit.

Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings (7:00)

This should be a pretty fun game tonight between these two Atlantic Division teams. With every team in action yesterday, obviously these teams are both in the second half of back to backs. The Leafs were in their usual form last night blowing a 3-0 first period lead to go on to give up five straight goals and lose 5-3 at home against the Avs. They hold a point lead over Tampa for third place in the division and have four wins in their last six games after losing their last two. The Red Wings have played well recently, right back in the Wild Card mix in the East. Coming off a 5-3 win yesterday at home against the Kings, they’ve picked up at least a point in each of their last five games, with a 4-0-1 record in that span. The Leafs won the first game between these teams in Detroit back in November 3-2. Both of these teams have pretty similar identities with really good offensive play but plenty of struggles on the back end. I’d lean the Leafs win this one at home, but in no way are they worth betting on at -200. If anything, there’s value on the Red Wings. I love the over in this game, and I’ll lay the juice on the alternate over 6.5 for a unit.

1.5u Rangers in regulation (-143)

1u Maple Leafs/Red Wings over 6.5 (-150)

4u Vegas Golden Knights – Stanley Cup Champions (+1000)

Record: 315-288-7 (-54.18 units)
