Sabres vs. Sharks: 1/15/24 – Game Reactions/Recap

With an early matinee start, today the Sabres came back to a pretty empty arena and shut out the Sharks for a solid, yet expected, 3-0 win against the worst team in the NHL.

Not a great first period, which ended scoreless. Both teams looked lousy and for it to be this even through 20 minutes against as shitty of a team as the Sharks, being outshot 8-7, kind of pathetic.

Started the second much better with sustained pressure in the San Jose zone with a lot of nice scoring chances that just couldn’t get to the net. Casey Mittelstadt scored the first goal of the game, finding a tiny hole in a weird shot through traffic that got deflected a bit, making it 1-0 Buffalo with 8:26 left in the second period. Alex Tuch made it 2-0 a few minutes later with 5:23 left, with a solid shot right between the circles on a one timer from Jack Quinn on the power play. Much better period for Buffalo and it was nice to go into the third with a two goal lead.

Jordan Greenway iced off the game with an empty netter with 3:26 left in the game.

FINAL: Sabres 3, Sharks 0

Solid win for the Sabres after the slow start, but it was expected tonight. It would’ve been a whole other level of embarrassment to lose to the fucking Sharks. We outshot San Jose 36-27, and outplayed them by an expected goal rate of 3.28-2.47. Solid 27 save shutout for UPL, his second of the year.

Nice to cash a bet on the Sabres today. Might be the first time this season I’ve done that.
