Another really nice day for me on the NHL yesterday, going 8-4 to win 4.58 units, a solid bounce back from Friday night. Today we have a good six game Sunday slate today. Let’s keep rolling!
Flyers vs. Senators (1:00)
Not a great early game to get the day started with both of these teams on the second half of back to backs after playing yesterday. The Flyers have been fantastic this season, in second place in the Metro Division. Torts has his team playing defense at an elite level and although their offense hasn’t been great on the season, they’ve been pretty solid lately. Yesterday Philly had their five game win streak come to an end with a 7-4 loss at home to the Avs. The Senators have been awful this year, at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. Yesterday they took the Jets to overtime, but I cashed in as they lost 2-1 in OT on Ehler’s incredible game winner. Ottawa has just five wins in their last 19 games. Their offense has been decent, but they have one of the worst defenses in the NHL. The. Sens won the first game between these teams in the first week of the season, winning 5-2 at home. I like the Flyers to answer back with a win at home tonight and I’ll take them for a unit, along with half a unit on the puck line. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Hurricanes vs. Wild (5:00)
Pretty high mismatch between these two cross conference teams. The Canes have been very good recently, coming into this evening’s game in third place in the Metro Division. Coming off a 4-2 win at home against the Red Wings on Friday night, they have eight wins in their last ten games and have picked up at least a point in 13 of their last 15. Statistically Carolina’s been very good on both ends of the ice. The Wild have really struggled this season, but they’ve gotten two big wins in their last three games. I got killed in their game on Friday night as they beat the Panthers 6-4 on the road in my biggest play in a while. Even with those wins though, Minnesota’s only gotten three wins in their last twelve games. They’ve struggled on both ends of the ice. I like the Hurricanes to win this one at a home and I’ll take them in regulation for a unit.
Red Wings vs. Lightning (7:00)
This should be a pretty fun matchup in the Atlantic Division tonight as these teams are both in playoff spots, separated by just two points in the standings. The Lightning have been good this season, moving into third place in the division yesterday with a 3-1 win in Buffalo in a game they didn’t really play all that well (and a Leafs loss) as they extended their win streak to five in a row. The Bolts have been good offensively but have struggled on the back end this season. The Red Wings have played very similar hockey, struggling a bit defensively but playing really well offensively. They had a three game win streak come too an end on Friday with a 4-2 loss in Carolina. That was their first time in eight games they failed to pick up at least a point, with a 6-1-1 record in that span. Detroit won the first game between these teams in the first week of the season with a 6-4 win at home. With the Lightning in the second half of a back to back, I’ll lean the Red Wings win again as a home dog, but not enough to bet it. I like the over quite a bit though, which I’ll take for a unit.
Islanders vs. Stars (7:30)
The Islanders made a huge coaching move yesterday that I don’t think many people saw coming. Yesterday out of the clouds, Lou Lamoriello fired Lane Lambert, with losing to the Blackhawks in overtime on Friday night evidently being his last straw, and hired Patrick Roy to replace him, despite the Isles being in a playoff spot most of the year. We’ll see how that move works out for them. The Islanders are still in the Wild Card race in the very close Eastern Conference, but come into tonights game on a four game losing streak after a 4-3 overtime loss in Chicago. They have just one win in their last seven games and haven’t played great on either end of the ice. The Stars have been good this year, comfortably in third place in the Central. They’re in the second half of a back to back tonight, coming off a 6-2 win in Jersey (easy winner for me) last night with five wins in their last seven games, playing really well on both ends of the ice. I’d lean the Stars win here on the road, but with them on the second half of a back to back and Patrick Roy making his debut as the new bench boss for the Isles, I’ll stay off this game. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet that either, so I’ll lay off this game entirely.
Ducks vs. Rangers (8:30)
Huge mismatch in this cross conference game tonight with both of these teams in the second half of back to backs, coming off losses yesterday. The Ducks have been horrible this season. They couldn’t even beat the Sharks last night (loss for me since I actually bet the Ducks), losing 5-3 on the road. Anaheim has just two wins in their last eleven games and only six in their last 30, and they’ve been horrendous on both ends of the ice. The Rangers have been very good this season but they’re in a slump right now. They lead the Metro Division, playing great hockey on both ends of the ice. Coming off a 2-1 loss last night in LA in Jonathan Quick’s return, they have just two wins in their last eight games. The Rags won the first game between these teams in a blowout, winning 5-1 at home in MSG. I expect another win here in a get-right spot for them against a lousy Ducks team. I’ll take the Rangers in regulation for 2 units and I’ll also take a half a unit shot on the Rags alternate -2.5 puck line. I’d slightly lean the under, but I don’t think its worth betting at 5.5.
Kraken vs. Maple Leafs (9:00)
Fun cross conference game to close out tonight’s slate. The Kraken come into tonight’s game on a three game losing streak, coming off a 4-2 loss in Edmonton (crazy double winner for me on Thursday night. Prior to that losing streak, they were on a heater, playing themselves into the Wild Card race in the West as they now have a 11-3-2 record in their last 16 games. Seattle’s been really good defensively with Joey Daccord’s great play in goal, but their offense has struggled. The Leafs are struggling right now, dropping to a Wild Card spot in the East. They’re in the second half of a back to back after they lost 6-4 in Vancouver (double winner for me) last night. They have just one win in their last six games and only six in their last 16. In usual Toronto fashion, their offense has been solid but they’ve struggled defensively. The first game between these teams in Toronto needed a shootout to determine the winner, with the Leafs winning 4-3 at home. I’d slightly lean the Kraken win at home to even the season series with a win at home to get out of their losing streak, with the Leafs in the second half of a back to back. I’d also lean the over, but I feel like the right move here is just staying off it entirely.
