Not my best day on the NHL yesterday, going 3-5-1 to lose 1.99 units. After a loaded slate yesterday, today we have just a three game slate before a big Monday slate tomorrow. Let’s bounce back!
Islanders vs. Rangers (3:00)
The New York City rivalry goes outdoors for the second Stadium Series game of the Weekend at MetLife Stadium. This will be the first of four games this season between these teams. The Isles are in the Wild Card race in the East, on the outside looking in, and have struggled recently. Coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the Kraken on Tuesday, they have just four wins in their last 15 games and they haven’t played all that well statistically on either end of the ice. The Rangers lead the Metro Division and have played fantastic hockey this year. They come into tonight’s game on a six game win streak after blowing out the Habs 7-4 on Thursday night. The Rags have been very good on both ends of the ice, and I expect them to get the win here today. I’ll take the Rangers for a unit. I’d slightly lean the under, but not enough to bet it.
Penguins vs. Kings (6:00)
Although neither of these teams have really impressed me lately, this makes a pretty interesting cross conference game tonight. The first game between these teams in LA in November was close, needing overtime for the Penguins to get a 4-3 win on the road. Pittsburgh’s struggled lately, with just three wins in their last nine games. They’re on the outside of the playoffs, coming off a 4-1 win in Chicago on Thursday that ended their three game losing streak. The Pens have been terrible offensively this season, but their defense and Tristan Jarry’s goaltending has been very good. The Kings are in the second half of a back to back tonight, coming off a 5-4 overtime win in Boston yesterday and after a brutal slump, they’ve since won four of their last five games. I’d slightly lean LA wins here on the road to tie up the season series, but not enough to bet on it with them on the second half of a back to back. I’ll lay off the side here, but I do like the under, which I’ll take at 6 for half a unit.
Avalanche vs. Coyotes (6:00)
Huge mismatch to close out tonight’s slate. The Avalanche have been in a slump lately, with just one win in their last six games, coming off a 6-3 loss in Tampa on Thursday, but they’ve had a fantastic season, comfortably in a playoff spot in the Central. Colorado’s been one of the best teams in the league offensively, but they have been inconsistent on the back end. The Coyotes have been brutal, especially on the road, lately after their decent start to the season. They’re coming off a 5-1 loss to the Hurricanes on Friday night, a no sweat winner for me, their eighth loss in a row. Statistically Arizona’s been lousy on both ends of the ice. These teams have played very close this season, with the Yokes having a 2-1 record on the season against the Avs, having won 4-3 in overtime at home, losing 4-1 on the road, and then winning once again in OT at home 5-4. I like Colorado to tie the season series with a get right win on home ice tonight, but the play I like best here is the Avs team total over 3.5, which I’ll take for 1.5 units. I’d lean the over on the game, but I think playing just the Avalanche side is the best move here.
