Tonight the Sabres got a big win against the Hurricanes in the shootout, the third in a row for the first time all season, in another really fun game to watch!
Tony D’Angelo came down in front past the lazy Sabres defense getting the Canes the first goal of the game just 2:40 into it, cashing in on a rebound. Terrible defensive play, UPL barely even had a chance to slide over quick enough to save it. Although there was just one goal all period, this was actually a really fun 20 minutes to watch, with both teams getting a lot of high quality chances. After giving up the first goal, we played solid hockey and got some great looks for goals, and couldn’t beat Spencer Martin.
The Sabres tied it up with 13:33 left in the second period, as the former Hurricane, Jeff Skinner got the rebound right in front off a shot from Dylan Cozens to tie up the game 1-1. Another pretty solid period for Buffalo, who looked like the better team. We did get lucky break though, with a goal for Carolina not counting for a probably wrong call for a hand pass.
After a questionable call, the Hurricanes took the lead on the power play, with a screened shot by Marty Necas finding the back of the net, to put the Canes up 2-1 with 5:18 left. We answered right back though to tie it up with 4:05 left in regulation. Peyton Krebs did an awesome job setting up the play from behind the net, passing it to Owen Power in front, who returned from injury tonight, who fired it with a very nicely placed shot to make it 2-2.
After a scoreless overtime period with some really good chances, onto the shootout, the dumbest way to determine the winner of a hockey game.
Tage went first, save Martin.
Next Sebastian Aho, save UPL.
Owen Power, Martin stops it.
Svechnikov, misses the net.
Alex Tuch, Martin saves it.
Teuvo Teravainen hits the cross bar with the game on his stick and we go into extras.
Casey Mittelstadt, SCORES!
UPL makes the save on Necas and the Sabres win it!
FINAL: Sabres 3, Hurricanes 2 (SO)
Really solid, fun game for the Sabres! First time this season that we win three games in a row, not making any big mistakes besides the first goal we gave up and capitalized on the fatigue of Carolina on the second half of a back to back. Both teams generated 32 shots each, and each scored once on their two power play chances, but we out chanced the Canes 19-17 and got the win.
Too late on the year, but still nice to see them get three wins in a row.
Let’s Go Buffalo!
