Although the Leafs are the far better team this season, the Sabres have played really well against Toronto this season with a 6-4 win on the road and 9-3 win at home. Tonight we played solid hockey again to stay hot, but fell short with a 2-1 overtime loss in Toronto.
Pretty boring first period of tonight’s game, as the Leafs came out as the better team early getting the first six shots of the game, but the Sabres finished it much better, not allowing any more and getting the last nine of the period. Neither team really had any good scoring chances, and we went into the first intermission scoreless.
William Nylander put the Leafs on the board first, 2:51 into the second period, on a great shot on a one timer past UPL. With 13:29 left in the second, Olofsson placed a shot perfectly in transition in the top right corner to tie up the game at 1-1. Another pretty solid period for Buffalo.
After a scoreless third period with some good chances for both teams, onto overtime!
With 39.2 seconds left in OT, after some really good scoring opportunities for both teams, Auston Matthews ended the game off a beautiful backhand pass from Mitch Marner through the crease from behind the net.
FINAL: Sabres 1, Maple Leafs 2 (OT)
The Sabres played a solid game tonight, especially defensively, as they just came up short. We were outshot 27-25 and just slightly outplayed by an expected goal rate of 2.61-2.47. UPL was very good in goal and we did a solid job of limiting the scoring chances for Toronto.
Decent game.
