Tonight the Sabres put together their second really good win in a row, in different fashion, as we dominated the Red Wings early for a huge 7-3 win on home ice.
Alex Tuch got the Sabres on the board nice and early in the game, going five hole to beat Lyon just 1:07 into the game, scoring on the first Buffalo shot on goal. Nice start to the game! It didn’t take long for the boys to get it to 2-0, only 2:50 into the game as Tyson Jost tipped in the puck off a nice move by Robinson. After a quick review though, the goal was determined to be offsides, with the goal taken off the board. Newest Sabres Bowen Byram scored again, cashing in a quick rebound to put the Sabres up 2-0, which counted this time, with 9:51 left to go in the first. The Red Wings answered back with 7:32 to go, with Ben Chiarot getting the goal off a cross ice pass in transition to put them on the board and make it a 2-1 game. Buffalo got that two goal lead back really quickly, just 32 seconds later, with a beautifully placed pass from Jordan Greenway cross ice to an open Zach Benson with 7 minutes left in the first after some really good team play by the entire Sabres offense. With 4:31 to go in the first, Zach Benson slid the puck over to Jeff Skinner, who cashed in to make it 4-1. Detroit pulled Lyon there, always great to chase a goalie out of the net so early in a game. FANTASTIC first period for the Sabres, controlling the puck, and playing really well on both ends of the ice.
The Sabres kept on rolling early in the second period as Connor Clifton made it 5-1 on a one timer in transition from Tage Thompson with 15:33 left in the second. With 10:55, Bowen Byram got his second goal of the game, again cashing in on a rebound to extend the game to 6-1 Buffalo. Detroit got a goal to answer back 24 seconds later on the power play, with Lucas Raymond tipping the puck past UPL to make it a 6-2 game. JJ Peterka added to the lead, with a rip of a shot, top shelf with 6:11 left in the second after he stole the puck in the neutral zone, adding to the score to get to 7-2. Another pretty much perfect period for Buffalo.
With 2:28 left in the game, Walman scored for the Red Wings to make it slightly less embarrassing of a loss to make it 7-3, which ends up being the final.
FINAL: Sabres 7, Red Wings 3
Fantastic, dominant win for the Sabres. We started off the game great, chasing Lyon out of the net and sustained it the entire game, playing really good hockey on both ends of the ice. The offense put on a show, early and often, the defense did a solid job at limiting chances for the Red Wings offense that could be dangerous at times, and UPL kept his good play going, making 21 saves on the 24 shots he faced. We outshot Detroit 39-24, almost doubled them up on scoring chances 22-13, and outplayed them by an expected goal rate of 3.37-2.77.
Great win. Let’s Go Buffalo!
