In a late night game tonight in Seattle, the Sabres got a huge 6-2 win on the road to bounce back from their loss in Detroit on Saturday.
The Sabres came into tonight’s game off a disappointing game in Detroit on Saturday afternoon where we put up a dud in the second period in a really key game, losing 4-1. They needed tonight’s win in the Wild Card race, coming into tonight five points back from Detroit, and behind both the Isles and the Caps.
It only took 24 seconds for Seattle to open the scoring in this game with a quick shot by Eberle on a complete defensive breakdown. Never want to go down 1-0 that early, but on the Sabres first shot of the game, Tage Thompson tied it right up a 1-1 only 49 seconds into the game on a nice short side rip. Exactly how you want to answer back there. Not exactly great for the under 5.5 that I bet on this game though. Just 3:56 into the game, the Sabres took their first lead with ripped shot short side by Jeff Skinner off the post and into the game, going up 2-1 early. My under here is cooked. Buffalo kept it rolling early, and only 5:41 into the game, Alex Tuch placed a nice wrist shot to go up 3-1 and send Daccord to the locker room. Matty Beniers kept the high scoring first going and with 5:24 left in the first, he tipped in a shot from Tolvanen on the power play to get the Kraken back to within one, down 3-2. Very eventful first period, a bit concerning defensively, but solid offensive effort in the first period. We outshot Seattle 11-9 and adjusted well.
Owen Power chased down the rebound of JJ Peter’s shot off the pipe to get the Sabres the 2-0 lead back, tipping the puck past Grubauer with 9:24 left in the second period. Right after that, Jeff Skinner scored his second of the game just 24 seconds later, placing the puck short side past Grubauer to go up 5-2. I thought the Sabres played way better hockey in that second period and it showed on the scoreboard, although it’s never fun to lose a bet that early…even on your own team.
With 1:58 left in the game, Jeff Skinner completed the hat trick with a one timer right in front on a backhanded pass from Jordan Greenway to win 6-2, as the Sabres hit the over by themselves.
FINAL: Sabres 6, Kraken 2
I’m not doing a video at 1am.
Really solid win for the Sabres tonight, after giving up a goal on the first shot of the game we adjusted well very quickly and put together a really good offensive game, scoring six goals capped by Jeff Skinner’s hat trick. It took us six games, but we finally get the first Sabres franchise win in the short history of the Kraken. We were outshot 34-30 but scored when it mattered, and although on paper we got outplayed by an expected goal rate of 4.12-1.85, and the high danger chances were 17-7 in Seattle’s favor, UPL was very good the last 59 minutes of the game, and the offense scored on their limited chances to get the big win.
Back at it tomorrow night in the second half of a back to back in Vancouver.
Let’s Go Buffalo!
