I was too busy to blog it, but it was nice to see the Sabres pick up a win on Saturday, beating the Blackhawks. Tonight Buffalo built on that as they followed it up with an impressive 4-2 win at home against the Stars in the midst of a Frozen Frenzy across the NHL.
As usual the Sabres offense was slow to start and although it looked dangerous at times, Buffalo played pretty well through a scoreless first period. We got some solid chances offensively, out Dallas 11-9 and UPL made some nice saves to keep the game scoreless, especially early.
Buffalo came out looking pretty good in the second. With 7:39 left in the second period, the Sabres got on the board first, on a tipped in shot the Peyton Krebs got after the rebound bounced off the cross bar. Buffalo followed it right up 1:33 later with a very nice play in transition for Ryan McLeod to score on a pass from Jason Zucker.
Tage Thompson opened the third period with a goal 4:17 into the third, sniping it from the circle after a nice little give and go with Owen Power. The Stars finally got on the board with the net empty way early as Thomas Harley scored with 4:36 left in the game. With 2:11 left, Tyler Seguin put the puck top shelf from right in front to make it a 3-2 game. Alex Tuch got the Sabres an empty netter with 10.2 seconds left in the game to finish off the game for a 4-2 win.
FINAL: Sabres 4, Stars 2
Really impressive win and surprising at that, as the Stars were my best bet on today’s huge Frozen Frenzy slate. Defensively the Sabres looked shaky to start this game, but we picked up the place and especially when the offense came alive in the second period we played solid hockey. We outplayed Dallas by an expected goal rate of 4.36-3.37 and limited their chances despite getting outshot 30-25.
