After a slow start to the season, the Sabres started off the day with a very good 5-3 win at home against the Red Wings this afternoon to make it three straight wins.
For once the Sabres started today’s game looking pretty good right off the puck drop. Just 4:04 into the game we got on the board first, as Jason Zucker got the rebound in front on the power play and got his first goal as a Sabre to open up the scoring. With exactly eight minutes left in the first, Tage Thompson made it 2-0 Buffalo on a beautiful play from Dahlin’s zone entry, to Peterka’s pass to Tage’s shot. The Red Wings got on the board with 5:17 left in the first as Alex DeBrincat made it 2-1 on a nice little give and go play with Lucas Raymond. Solid first period for the Sabres.
3:20 into the second period, Tage Thompson got his second of the game, making it 3-1 Buffalo as he got to the perfect spot in the slot and got a quick shot past Alex Lyon. Just 14 seconds later, Detroit answered right back as Michael Rasmussen shoveled a rebound from right above the crease past UPL to make it a 3-2 game. The Red Wings tied up the game at 3 shorthanded as Raymond took the puck away, barreled down the ice and beat Luukkonen glove side with 8:58 left in the second period. With 4:06 to go in the second, the Sabres took the lead back as the rebound from a rip from the point by Bowen Byram went off the leg of a Red Wings defenseman in front of the net and into the goal. Not as clean of a period for the Sabres defensively, but it was a fun 20 minutes of hockey to watch.
After a scoreless third period, Jack Quinn capped off the win with an empty netter with 47.3 seconds left in the game to give the Sabres a nice 5-3 victory.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Red Wings 3
Really solid win for the Sabres today. We looked like the better team this afternoon from start to finish of this game. Buffalo outshot Detroit 39-25 and outplayed them by an expected goal rate of 2.69-1.86. They stayed in it throughout, even when they gave up the two goals to let the Red Wings tie the game, it was nice to see them keep bouncing back. Solid win.
