Sabres @ Ducks: 11/22/24 – Game Reactions/Recap

Coming off a solid 1-0 shutout win in LA on Wednesday, the Sabres got a very nice comeback win to beat the Ducks 3-2 in overtime on Sabres after dark in what wasn’t a great game.

The Ducks got on the board first, 4:02 into the game as Drew Helleson’s shot from up top in the slot beat UPL, who was completely screened and got beat glove side. Slow, lousy start for the Sabres tonight but I thought they looked better as the period went on, especially in the last six or seven minutes as they sustained possessions with the puck. Hopefully we see them come out with more, quicker effort to start the second. Still not a great period though.

Buffalo looked terrible to start off the second period, erasing the nice play they had late in the first. After the Sabres killed off a double minor from Benson, the Ducks scored their second of the game as Isac Lundestrom popped the puck up over Luukkonen up front with 5:53 left in the second to put Anaheim up 2-0. The Sabres didn’t get a shot on goal in the second till ten and a half minutes into the period. We finally got on the board though before the period ended, as Peyton Krebs made it 2-1 with 1:23 left in the second, tipping in the puck behind Gibson with a nice second effort on a rebound. With 32.7 seconds left in the period, Jason Zucker went tearing down the ice in his hometown on a breakaway and beating Gibson to tie up the game at 2. Great way to end what was a pretty lousy second period until that last minute and a half. We did get to see a fight (and a half) that period too, so I guess that was fun.

After he gave up the two soft goals, UPL was very good in the third period to keep the game tied up at 2. Both teams had a lot of solid chances in a fun third to watch, but with no goals in that period, onto overtime and the Sabres pick up at least a point.

The Sabres were the better team through overtime with way more possession time and much better chances and after a 2 on 0 with Owen Power after Alex Tuch stole the puck on a great hit, Jiri Kulich came in as the trailer and put the puck past Gibson for the game winner. Beauty play to lead to the game winning in overrrrrrtimeeeeeeeee.

FINAL: Sabres 3, Ducks 2 (OT)

We’re over .500 for the first time this season, which is good to see. The Sabres played lousy for a lot of this game. They started the game slow, then looked decent late in the first period, but then couldn’t keep that up with an awful start to the second. The end of the second though got us going and we came back with that big overtime win. This wasn’t a pretty game, but we got the dub and that’s all that matters in the end.

Back at it again tomorrow night, looking to finish off the California sweep in San Jose for Joe Thornton Night in the Shark Tank.
