Tonight the Sabres finished off the California sweep in San Jose tonight on Joe Thornton night with a 4-2 win as James Reimer made his Sabres debut in goal.
The Sharks scored first tonight as Fabian Zetterlund jumped on a rebound and cashed in, with Reimer on the ice as he put the puck in the empty net. Just over a minute later, Peyton Krebs ripped a beautiful shot to tie up the game on a 2 on 1 and pointed to the 19 on the back of his jersey that matches Jumbo’s 19 in the rafters of the Shark Tank. Fun first period with both teams generating a good amount of chances in an entertaining first 20 minutes.
4:07 into the second period, the Sharks took the lead back as Luke Kunin put the loose puck right in front of the net past Reimer, putting San Jose up 2-1.
The Sabres tied it up pretty quickly into the third as Dylan Cozen ripped a screened shot from the top of the slot just 3:07 into the third. Alex Tuch gave the Sabres the lead 5:27 into the period, getting a breakaway shorthanded after forcing Celebrini to turn the puck over and tearing down the ice. Buffalo killed off back to back penalties late and Rasmus Dahlin closed out the game in the closing second of regulation with an empty netter to make it a 4-2 Sabres final to cap off the road trip sweep in California.
FINAL: Sabres 4, Sharks 2
Great win for the Sabres tonight to end an awesome California road trip. Fun game tonight. James Reimer overexceeded my expectations in his Sabres debut between the pipes tonight, making 31 saves on 33 shots, including some highlight reel saves to keep the Sabres in the game. On the road trip, the Sabres penalty kill went 12/12 and there was a chance we could’ve gone 0-3 on this Cali swing and somehow won all three. Fun few nights of hockey.
Back home against the Wild on Wednesday.
