Tonight the Sabres took a pathetic loss on Long Island, getting shut out 3-0 by the Islanders in a pretty terrible effort. I wasn’t able to blog Wednesday or yesterday’s games and I wouldn’t have hated missing tonight’s.
The Sabres had a ton of really good opportunities in front to start the game, but it was the Islanders that scored first as Matt Martin cashed in won a rebound that James Reimer gave up, putting the Isles up 1-0 with 7:08 left in the first. Lindy challenged it for an offside (worst challenge rule in hockey by far) and after a lengthy review, it proved to be successful, taking the goal off the board. Decent period that I thought was pretty evenly played.
The Isles ended up still getting the first goal of the game that counted as with 12:37 left in the second period, Anders Lee tipped in a Kyle Palmieri shot right in front on the power play, putting New York up 1-0 for real this time. 9:28 into the period, Anders Lee set up a great cross ice pass to Holmstrom in transition to put the Isles up 2-0. I thought that was a real lousy period for Buffalo.
With 7.5 seconds left in the game, Holmstrom buried his second goal of the game on the empty net for a completely pathetic 3-0 shutout loss for the Sabres on Long Island.
FINAL: Sabres 0, Islanders 3
Even though we outshot the Isles 29-20, it felt like we couldn’t get anything going offensively in the slightest tonight and not able to solve Sorokin we got shut out. The goals we gave up I didn’t think were horrible, one on a two on one and the other on a tip in on the PK, but just a bad game for Buffalo, especially in the second period.
It’s gonna be tough to bounce back and end this three game losing streak as the Avalanche come to town on Tuesday.
