The Sabres extended their losing streak to seven in a row tonight with yet another pathetic defensive effort, losing 6-5 in a shootout at home to the Red Wings, blowing another multi goal lead in the third period.
The Sabres scored first tonight, just 1:38 into the game on a beauty rip short side from Zach Benson in transition that deflected off the Detroit defenseman’s stick and past Husso glove side to put Buffalo up 1-0 early. Detroit tied it up relatively quickly though with 15:55 as the Sabres pathetic defense let Alex DeBrincat just walked right in front of the net without anyone touching him and scores. How sad of a defensive effort. Brutal and really highlights the state of the franchise. Just 41 seconds later, Andrew Copp gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with the Sabres defense letting him sit right on the crease and get the easy rebound. Absolutely pathetic. Tage Thompson tied up the game at 2-2 with 9:35 left in the first on a great play in transition by Jason Zucker to pass it up front as he ran out of room setting up Tage in front. With Jordan Greenway screening Husso, Jason Zucker scored on a delayed penalty to give the Sabres the lead back at 3-2 with 4:34 left in the first. Good period for the Sabres offensively, but the defense was fucking horrible.
It didn’t take long into the second period for the Red Wings to tie up the game at 3, as Lucas Raymond went streaking up the ice in transition and ripping a great shot glove side on Reimer off a perfect pass from Larkin just 1:05 into the second. The Sabres answered right back, 1:21 later as Nicolas Aube-Kubel tipped in the rebound from an Owen Power shot to answer back, getting Buffalo the lead again at 4-3 with his first goal as a Sabre. Jason Zucker, on his second goal of the game, put Buffalo up by two for the first time all game, getting past the Red Wings defense and beating Cossa, who replaced Husso in goal to start the second, right in front with 10:14 left in the second, making it a 5-3 game. Entertaining period. Let’s hold this 5-3 lead and end this losing streak.
Andrew Copp scored his second goal of the game for Detroit, scoring on the second effort of a rebound in front with 9:33 left in regulation, to make it a one goal game again at 5-4. With 4:18 left in regulation, Mo Seider tied up the game on an absolute rip of a shot. The Sabres blowing another multi goal lead, who woulda thought?
Onto overtime. The Sabres had a huge chance to win it on a McLeod takeaway and breakaway but hit the net. Both teams had some good chances to score, couldn’t do it and onto the shootout we go.
Tage Thompson went first, running out of room to go back to the backhand and couldn’t score.
Lucas Raymond did the same move and scored to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead through one round. Cossa got the save on a pretty solid move for JJ Peterka. With the game on his stick, the South Buffalo native, Patty Kane missed his shot, giving Tuch a chance to tie it up which he did, top shelf to tie up the shootout. The Red Wings captain, Dylan Larkin picked up the win with his goal.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Red Wings 6 (SO)
The offense played good tonight, but yet another pathetic showing by the Sabres defense and goaltending.
