I pretty much broke even on yesterday’s big NHL slate, going 5-3-1, losing 0.16 units. Today we have a decent six game Sunday slate, let’s win!
Rangers vs. Hurricanes (12:30)
Kind of a lousy Metro Division matchup here. The Rangers have been in complete disarray recently. Although they are coming off a 3-1 win in Dallas on Friday, they’ve won just four of their last 15 games and their whole organization has been a complete mess. The Hurricanes are coming off a 3-1 loss in DC on Friday, but have played well lately, with four wins in their last seven games, pretty comfortably in third place in the division. I like the Canes to win this one on the road and I’ll take Carolina for a unit to get the day started. I’d lean the under, but not enough to bet it.
Lightning vs. Panthers (5:00)
The battle of Florida is always a fun rivalry matchup and both of these teams have played fantastic hockey as of late. The Lightning are coming off a 3-1 win on Thursday at home against the Blues to extend their win streak to four in a row, winning six of their last seven games. They’ve been solid on both ends of the ice, and their offense especially has been elite. I think the Panthers are the most talented team in the East, tied in points with the Leafs at the top of the Atlantic Division. They’re on a three game win streak, coming off a 2-1 overtime win on Friday night at home against St. Louis and they have a 9-2-1 record in their last twelve games. I think the Panthers are the better team in the state, and I’d lean they win here down the road in Tampa, but there’s no denying how well the Bolts have played lately, so I’ll lay off this game. I’d slightly lean the over, but not enough to bet that.
Capitals vs. Kings (5:00)
This should be a fantastic cross conference matchup. The Capitals are playing really well this year, and should get Ovi back in the lineup after the Christmas break to give them an even bigger boost. They’re currently a point back from the Devils to lead the Eastern Conference. Washington’s coming off a 3-1 win at home against the Canes on Friday night bouncing back from two back to back losses on Monday and Tuesday, but they have a 9-2-1 record in their last ten games. The Kings have been pretty solid lately too. They’re in the second half of a back to back tonight, coming off letting me down yesterday afternoon with a 3-2 overtime loss in Nashville. In their last eleven games, LA has gone 8-1-2 and they’ve been good on both ends of the ice. With the Kings in the second half of a back to back, I’d lean the Capitals win this one at home, and I’d slightly lean the under, but not enough to bet anything on this game. Should be a fun one.
Utah HC vs. Ducks (5:00)
Pretty lousy matchup here in the West. Utah’s playing great hockey right now. Coming off a 2-1 win in Minnesota on Friday night (double loser for me), they’re on a four game win streak and seven game point streak with a 9-2-2 record in their last 13 games. The Ducks are one of the worst teams in the league. They’re coming off a 4-2 loss (double winner for me) against the Avs on Friday and have just two wins in their last eight games. The first game between these teams back in October needed overtime, with the Ducks getting a 5-4 win at home. I don’t see that happening. I like Utah to win here at home and I’ll take them in regulation for a unit. I’d lean the under, but not enough to bet it.
Avalanche vs. Kraken (8:00)
This is a pretty boring mismatch in the Western Conference. The Avalanche won both previous games already between these teams this season, winning 3-2 on the road in Seattle in October and then 6-3 at home early in November. I’m expecting them to complete the season sweep tonight. Colorado has been good lately. Coming off aback to back 4-2 wins in California on Thursday and Friday against the Sharks and Ducks, they have six wins in their last eight games. The Kraken on the other hand are in quite a slump, on a four game losing streak, in the second half of a back to back tonight, coming off a 6-2 loss in Vegas last night. I like Colorado to win again here tonight and I’ll take the Avs in regulation for 1.5 units. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Oilers vs. Senators (8:00)
Fun cross conference Canadian matchup to end tonight’s slate, with both of these teams playing really well lately, both in the second half of back to backs after overtime wins yesterday. The Oilers let me down needing OT to beat the Sharks yesterday afternoon, but after their slow start to the year, they’re definitely Cup contenders again, with ten wins in their last twelve games. Ottawa had a slow start to the season but they’re on a hell of a run right now, tied with the Lightning, just two points back from the Bruins for third place in the Atlantic. Coming off a 5-4 overtime win in Vancouver last night, they’re on a six game win streak with just one loss in their last nine games. Edmonton won the first game between these teams 5-2 on the road in November, but the Senators are playing way better now than they were at that time. I’d lean the Oilers win at home again to end the Sens’ win streak, but I don’t think they’re worth betting at the -190 price. I’d slightly lean the over, but the best play on this game is nothing at all
