NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/6/25

I went 1-3 yesterday for a losing Sunday on the NHL, losing 1.46 units, with two games going to overtime not going my way. Tonight we have a quick four game slate before a huge slate tomorrow. Let’s get back to winning!

Sabres vs. Capitals (7:00)

Pretty terrible matchup for my Sabres to start off the night. Buffalo’s in shambles. It’s a good thing the Bills are good because the Sabres are the worst team in the Eastern Conference and playing horrendous hockey on both ends of the ice. We’re on a three game losing streak with just three wins in our last 19 games, coming off a pathetic 3-1 loss in Vegas on Saturday night. The Capitals on the other hand have been fantastic all season. They lead the Eastern Conference and are coming off a big 7-4 win against the Rangers in Saturday afternoon’s matinee, and Ovi’s right back in the goal record chase that could still happen this year. It wouldn’t shock me if he scores a few more tonight. Washington won the first game between these teams 4-2 at home a few weeks ago, and I expect another similar result tonight. The price is far too cheap here on Washington. I’ll take the Capitals for 1.5 units along with half a unit on the puck line. I’d slightly lean the over, but not enough to bet it.

Canadiens vs. Canucks (7:30)

This is such a boring cross conference matchup, but it could actually end up being a fun game. The Canadiens were horrible to start the season but have caught fire as of late. They have seven wins in their last nine games, coming off pulling off the +250 upset in a shootout on the road in Colorado on Saturday to bounce back in the second half of a back to back from losing on Friday in Chicago. The Canucks are on the opposite trajectory. They started the season pretty hot but have since fallen off, with just two wins in their last eight games, coming off getting shut out 3-0 in Nashville on Friday. I’d lean Montreal gets another win here at home, and I think there’s good value on the Habs as a home dog. I’d also lean the under, but the best move on this game is just staying off it.

Avalanche vs. Panthers (9:00)

This should be a spectacular cross conference matchup that I don’t think would really be a surprise to many if it ended up being a potential preview of the Stanley Cup Finals (although I don’t see Colorado getting there). The Avalanche have been spectacular as off late, tied in points with Dallas for third place in the Central. They’re coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the Habs at home on Saturday that ended a six game win streak, but have a 10-2-1 record in their last 13 games and have played great on both ends of the ice. The Panthers are my pick to win the East for the third straight season. They’ve let me down a bit lately though. On Friday night they beat the Penguins, but lost my regulation bet, giving up the game tying goal with 20 seconds to go, but still won 3-2 in a shootout. The Avs won the first game between these teams 7-4 on the road back in November. I’d lean they win this one too, and I’d lean the under slightly but not enough to bet either. Should be a great game to watch tonight.

Kraken vs. Devils (10:00)

Pretty lousy cross conference mismatch to end the night. The Kraken have been pretty terrible this season, and have just two wins in their last nine games, coming off a 4-2 loss at home to the Oilers to cap off my night with a winner on Saturday. Seattle’s struggled on both ends of the ice. The Devils have been very good, in second place in the Metro Division, but they’re in a slump right now, coming into tonight on a four game losing streak off a 3-2 loss in San Jose on Saturday. The Devils won the first game between these teams 3-2 at home and although I’ve thought they’d win (and then I lost) on all four of those games in this losing streak, I like them to bounce back on the road and get a win tonight. I’ll take Jersey in regulation for a unit. I’d lean the over as well with it at just 5.5, but I think the better play is to stay off the total.
