Slight losing Sunday for me on the NHL yesterday, going 3-2 but losing 0.7 units. Tonight we have just a small three game slate before a huge slate tomorrow night.
Flyers vs. Panthers (7:00)
Pretty big Eastern Conference mismatch here. The Flyers have been horrible this season, tied with the Islanders at the bottom of the Metro Division. They ended a four game losing streak on Saturday with a dominant 6-0 shutout win at home against the Ducks on Saturday, just their fourth win in their last 13 games. The Panthers have been very good, comfortably in second place in the Atlantic Division. They have struggled a little bit recently with just three wins in their last eight games. On Saturday afternoon in the early game, I thought they dominated the Bruins, outshooting them 43-18, but after Sam Reinhart tied up the game with less than three seconds left in regulation to force overtime, they ended up losing 4-3 in the final two seconds of OT. Florida won both previous games between these teams, winning 4-3 in a shootout at home in November and then 7-5 on the road in December. I expect another win for the Cup Champs and I’ll take the Panthers for a unit. I’d slightly lean the under, but I’m not betting it.
Blackhawks vs. Flames (7:30)
This is such a lousy game. I think both of these teams sucks. The Blackhawks are the worst team in the NHL. They blew a 2-0 and 3-1 lead against the Oilers at home on Saturday night to lose 4-3, and have just two wins in their last ten games. They Flames are much better, but still a pretty bad team. They’re coming off two wins in a row after a 2-1 win at home against the Kings on Saturday. Calgary won both prior games between these teams at home, 3-1 in October and then 6-4 at home late in December. The Flames are the far better team here defensively and I like them to win this one on the road to complete the season sweep. I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the under with both teams struggling to score, but I don’t like it enough to bet on with how lousy Chicago’s been defensively.
Oilers vs. Kings (9:30)
For as lousy as the first two games are tonight, this should be a fantastic Pacific Division matchup that’s likely a preview of the first round of the playoffs once again with these teams in second and third place, separated by just two points. Both of these teams let me down on Saturday night. The Oilers are coming off a 4-3 win in Chicago, coming back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits, but not able to cover the puck line. They’ve been playing great lately though with a 16-4-1 record in their last 21 games. The Kings are coming off a 2-1 loss in Calgary that ended a five game win streak but have been really solid lately with a 13-3-2 record in their last 19 games. The first game between these teams needed overtime with LA winning 4-3 at home a couple weeks ago. I’d lean the Oilers win this one at home, but I think the price is too inflated at -190. I’d also lean the under, but I think the best play here is no action at all. I’ll lay off this game entirely but I’m looking forward to watching it.
