NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/17/25

Solid night for me on yesterday’s big NHL slate, going 7-2 to win 2.5 units. Tonight we have just two games before another huge slate tomorrow, let’s win again!

Sabres vs. Penguins (7:00)

Pretty lousy Eastern Conference game here as both of these teams have been lousy this season. The Sabres have three wins in our last four games, coming off a surprising game on Wednesday night, where we got the 4-2 win at home against Carolina despite getting outplayed and almost blowing it late and actually scoring a goal in the third period for the first time in history without recording a shot on goal in that period. Fantastic night in goal for UPL though. This fucking team. Despite the three wins in our last four, we have just six wins in our last 23 games. The Penguins have been just slightly better, yet worse statistically on both ends of the ice. They have just one win in their last eight games, on a three game losing streak coming off a 4-2 loss at home to the Kraken. The first game in Pittsburgh between these teams went to overtime back in October after the Sabres blew a 3-1 first period lead and then gave up the game tying goal to Rickard Rakell with 46 seconds to go in regulation before Sid ended the game in OT on the power play. I’d lean the Pens win this one again on the road but not enough to bet it. I do like the over though, which I’ll take at 6 for half a unit.

Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights (7:00)

For as lousy as that first matchup is tonight, this cross conference one should should be fantastic between two playoff teams. Carolina’s comfortably in third place in the Metro but haven’t been excellent lately. They’re coming off two bad losses in a row, being the better team but not solving Luukkonen in Buffalo, losing 4-2 on Wednesday after a 3-2 overtime loss at home to the Ducks on Sunday. The Canes have been good on both ends of the ice, yet have a 5-3-2 in their last ten games. The Golden Knights have been very good all year and they’re my pick to win the Cup. They’re in a little bit of slump right now with just one win in their last four games, coming off a 5-3 loss in Nashville on Tuesday. The Hurricanes won the first game between these teams 5-2 on the road in November. I’d lean Vegas wins this one on the road and I’d lean the over, but I think the right play on this game is nothing at all. I’ll lay off it completely. Should be a real fun game.
