Sabres @ Flames: 1/23/25 – Game Reactions/Recap

Last night the Sabres couldn’t capitalize on plenty of chances and fell apart, losing 5-2 on the road to the Calgary Flames.

The Sabres looked pretty good early, getting some solid chances and controlling the puck. Exactly twelve minutes into the game, with the Sabres on the power play, Jonathan Huberdeau stole the puck, went streaking down the ice on a breakaway, beating UPL to put the Flames up 1-0, shorthanded. Pretty evenly played period as it got going and actually pretty fun to watch.

The Sabres tied up the game 2:50 into the second with Mattias Samuelsson ripping the puck from the point and having it deflected into the net. Nice goal. With 12:42 left in the second, Buffalo made it 2-1 as Tage Thompson tipped in a long range shot by Samuelsson. Made the Flames defense look like it was the Sabres. A few minutes later though, it looked like UPL made the initial save, but the puck dripped past him on a Kadri shot for Calgary to tie the game at 2 with 9:29 left in the second period. Another fun period.

The Flames took their second lead of the game, 3:29 into the third period, with Jakob Pelletier’s tip in front getting deflected twice quick in front and Luukkonen couldn’t track it. Kind of a lucky goal for Calgary. Calgary poured it on with a ton of chances through the third, but UPL was able to keep it a 3-2 game as the Sabres sustained the pressure. With 2:45 to go, Yegor Sharangovich after ringing one off the pipe, scored on the empty net making it a 4-2 game to likely ice it off. Backlund got another one after that to make it 5-2, technically shorthand, stealing the puck and wheeling it up the ice.

FINAL: Sabres 2, Flames 5

This game was the perfect example of this team. They looked good at times, and showed signs of life, but they just fall apart. We had plenty of chances and just couldn’t score, getting outworked on both ends of the ice. Buffalo couldn’t score on six power play opportunities. We gave up two shorthanded goals. Shit like that adds up and you could tell as the game went on how the Sabres just got outworked. And Calgary isn’t even that good of a team. Just shows how far behind Buffalo is from the rest of the league. This franchise blows.
