NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/31/25

Lousy night on the NHL for me yesterday, going 2-6 to lose 3.43 units. I absolutely played the Caps game poorly and had a few other disappointing results. Gotta bounce back on tonight’s four game slate to drop the puck on the weekend.

Sabres vs. Predators (7:00)

The Sabres figured out a way to sell tickets for this shitty game by making it Rob Ray night. Great idea since there’s no one that would care about this horrendous cross conference matchup if they hadn’t. This is a brutal game. The Sabres are the worst team in the East and come into tonight off a shocking 7-2 win on Tuesday night against the Bruins at home where both Tage Thompson and JJ Peterka scored hat tricks. The Preds are coming off two losses in a row after a five game win streak, losing 3-1 at home against the Canucks on Wednesday. I’d lean Nashville wins here on the road, but both of these teams are bad enough that it isn’t worth betting on either side. I do like the over though, which I’ll take for half a unit.

Stars vs. Canucks (8:00)

This is a lousy mismatch in the West. The Stars have been a very good team this year. They come into tonight on a three game win streak after a 4-3 overtime win in Vegas on Tuesday where Wyatt Johnston scored a natural hat trick for Dallas to erase a 3-1 deficit. They sit in third place in the Central, comfortably in a playoff spot and a point back from the Wild for home ice. The Canucks have been a mess, despite still being in the race for the second Wild Card. They are coming into tonight on a three game win streak after a slump, coming off a 3-1 win in Nashville on Wednesday. Dallas is the far better team here and I expect them to win at home, which I’ll take for a unit. I’d lean the under very slightly, but I’m not touching it.

Avalanche vs. Blues (9:00)

Not the best Central Division matchup here as both of these teams have struggled a bit as of late. The Avs are still comfortably in the Wild Card in the West, but coming off a 5-2 loss on Long Island on Tuesday they have just one win in their last five games. The Blues are a bit outside of the race for the second Wild Card, and have been inconsistent, coming into tonight on a three game losing streak following a 5-2 loss to the Canucks at home on Monday. Colorado’s the way better team here and I like them to win it at home, which I’ll take for half a unit. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet on it.

Utah Hockey Club vs. Blue Jackets (9:00)

This matchup isn’t great but I could see it end up being a pretty fun game although the price on it makes no sense to me. Utah hasn’t been good, coming into tonight with just five wins in their last 18 games, on a three game losing streak after falling 3-2 in overtime to the Penguins at home on Wednesday, giving up Sid’s game winner. The Jackets have been a pleasant surprise all season, far exceeding expectations and are actually in the second Wild Card in the East right now. They’ve played great lately with a 13-4-2 record in their last 19 games, in the second half of a back to back tonight coming off a 2-1 overtime win in Vegas last night. Even in the second half of a back to back, I actually think Columbus should be favored here and no shot should Utah be -225. We’re getting some great value here and I feel like I can’t walk into a trap two nights in a row. I’ll take the Jackets +1.5 for a unit along with half a unit on the moneyline at +190. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
