NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 2/9/25

Slight winning day for me yesterday on the huge NHL slate, going 8-6 to squeeze out a 0.42 unit win. Just two early games this afternoon before Super Bowl Sunday to go into the Four Nations break. Let’s win on both of them to go into the much needed break hot!

Capitals vs. Utah HC (12:30)

Pretty big mismatch for this cross conference game to start off the day. The Capitals are rolling and the best team in the Eastern Conference this year. The greatest goal scorer of all time, Alex Ovechkin, who scored for the fourth game in a row on Thursday in the Caps 4-3 win in Philly, is now just 16 away from breaking Gretzky’s goal record. Washington comes into today with just one regulation loss in their last 18 games, playing elite hockey on both ends of the ice. Utah’s in the second half of a back to back today, coming off a 7-3 loss in Carolina yesterday afternoon. They’ve won just two of their last eight games. The Caps made easy work of Utah the first time they played this season, winning 6-2 on the road in November. Especially with Utah in the second half of a back to back, I love the Capitals to win here at home. I’ll take them in regulation for 1.5 units. I’d lean the over, but don’t like it enough to bet on. I also like Ovechkin to score again here, and I’ll take the his anytime goal for half a unit.

Canadiens vs. Lightning (1:00)

Not a great game here in the Atlantic with both of these teams in the second half of back to backs following matinee games yesterday. The Habs after going on a hot run have struggled lately. Yesterday they were shut out 4-0 at home by the Devils (easy win for me) and have just one win in their last eight wins, and that win came against the lowly Sharks. The Lightning are playing great right now with a 4-0-1 record in their last five games after a slump. They come into today off a 6-3 win in Detroit yesterday to put them back in third in the Atlantic with a two point lead over the Sens. Montreal actually won the first two games between these teams, winning 5-2 on the road in Tampa on December 29th and then 3-2 at home on January 21st, erasing a 2-0 deficit with Jake Evans scoring the game winner with 2:15 left in regulation. I like the Bolts to avoid the season sweep here and I’ll take Tampa on the road for a unit. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet it.
