The Sabres were competitive tonight, playing a fun game at home against Montreal, but didn’t have enough as the Habs win their sixth straight in Buffalo, 4-2.
Pretty evenly played first period, as I thought the Sabres were the slightly better team through 20 minutes at home. With a scoreless game through 20 minutes, I thought we played pretty good hockey, pushing the offense more, but regardless, still 0-0 through one. Both teams had some good scoring chances, making it pretty fun to watch.
The Habs got on the board first on the power play. Off a nice 3 on 1 that turned into a 3 on 2, Cole Caufield scored the first goal of the game 1:27 into the second period off a nice setup by Laine. Alex Tuch tied it up for Buffalo with 13:56 left in the first period on a solid play from Jacob Bryson to set him up after grinding it out in the corner to get the puck. Jiri Kulich scored on a rip off a one timer from Dahlin to give the Sabres their first lead of the game, set up by Dahlin with 12:27 left in the second. Montreal tied it up again on the rush with 6:27 left to go in the second on an odd man rush with Josh Anderson capitalizing on an odd man rush. With 2.6 seconds left in the second, Alex Newhook tipped it past Luukkonen on 4 on 4 play to give Montreal a 3-2 lead late in the period.
Both teams had some good chances to score, but after no scoring the whole period, with 1:38 to go, Montreal made it 4-2 on a Jake Evans empty netter. Another loss.
FINAL: Sabres 2, Canadiens 4
Typical Sabres loss. This was a fun game to watch tonight, and competitive throughout, but as usual Buffalo didn’t have enough to get it done.
