I went 4-3 last night winning 0.64 units on the NHL, with the Stars and Oilers both needing OT. Tonight following a crazy trade deadline today, we have a six game slate. Let’s win again!
Devils vs. Jets (7:00)
Not the best cross conference matchup. The Devils are struggling big time right now. They’re still hanging onto the third spot in the Metro with a four point lead over the Blue Jackets. They’re coming off a 4-3 loss in Dallas on Tuesday, giving up the game winning goal with 5 seconds left in regulation and have just 9 wins in their last 25 games. Jersey took a huge hit this week, with Jack Hughes now out the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery due to the injury he sustained from his collision with Jack Eichel last Sunday. The Jets have been fantastic this season, leading the West. They ended a three game losing streak with an easy 4-1 win in Philly on Tuesday. Winnipeg made a few nice moves today, acquiring Brandon Tanev from the Kraken and Luke Schenn from the Preds, by way of the Pens. Ton of grit out of those two. I like the Jets to win this one on the road tonight and I’ll take them for a unit. I like the under too, which I’ll take for half a unit.
Capitals vs. Red Wings (7:00)
Not a great matchup in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals lead the East and after the deadline deals from the Hurricanes and the Devils losing Jack Hughes for the rest of the year, I’d pretty much pencil in Washington for the Eastern Conference Finals. The Caps added to their lineup today, acquiring Anthony Beauvillier from the Pens in exchange for a second round draft pick. The Red Wings are in the midst of the Wild Card race in the East, but have struggled, on the outside looking in. They come into tonight on a four game losing streak, coming off a 4-2 loss at home against Utah. Detroit won the first game between these teams 4-2 at home in December. I like the Caps to answer back. I’ll take them in regulation for half a unit along with continuing to ride Ovi anytime goal for half a unit in his race to Gretzky, now just ten away. The total’s a crapshoot to me.
Blackhawks vs. Utah HC (8:30)
Terrible matchup in the Central Division. The Blackhawks are one of the worst teams in the NHL and didn’t a whole lot today. They have picked up points in their three last games, losing 4-3 in overtime against the Senators after beating LA and Anaheim. Team’s brutal. Utah’s three points outside of the second Wild Card in the West and playing well right now. They’re playing pretty well right now with seven wins in their last ten games, coming off a 4-2 win in Detroit on Thursday night. Utah won both prior games against Blackhawks, winning 5-2 at home to start the season and then 2-1 at home in February. I like them to win again here on the road and will take the Utah Hockey Club for a unit. I’d lean the over slightly, but I’m not touching it.
Canucks vs. Wild (10:00)
This is such a boring Western Conference matchup. The Canucks have struggled this season, a point behind Calgary for the second Wild Card spot in the West where they’re gonna get steamrolled in the first round by the Jets. I thought they’d move either Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson (the good one), or both today, but they didn’t. Vancouver’s coming off a 3-2 win at home against the Ducks on Wednesday with a heated finish that I couldn’t get an empty net or tying goal to get my over. They’ve got two wins in their last six games. The Wild have dealt with a ton of injuries, comfortably in a playoff spot, but tied with Colorado for third in the Central. I fully expect, especially with the Avs revamping their roster today, that they fall to the Wild Card. Minnesota’s won their last two games, coming off a 4-3 win in Seattle on Tuesday. The first game between these teams went to overtime, with the Wild winning 3-2 at home in December. The side is a crapshoot here, and I’d lean the under, but I’m not touching this game.
Golden Knights vs. Penguins (10:00)
Huge mismatch in this cross conference game. The Golden Knights have been fantastic. They have a four point lead over the Oilers for first place in the Pacific, on a three game win streak with just one loss in their last seven games, coming off a dominant 5-2 win against the Leafs on Wednesday, scoring five in a row to start the game. Vegas made a small, but nice move for the deadline, bringing back an original misfit, Reilly Smith. The Penguins on the other hand have been brutal, in last place in the Metro. They gave up the game winner in a 4-1 loss to Colorado on Tuesday with less than five minutes left to go in regulation for their third straight loss and they have just one win in their last eight games. Earlier this week, the Pens sent Michael Bunting to Nashville in exchange for Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak, but they got worse today, sending Anthony Beauvillier to the Caps in exchange for a second round pick and flipping Schenn to the Jets. I love Vegas here and I’ll take them in regulation for a unit. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Ducks vs. Blues (10:00)
Not the best matchup, but I could see this being an entertaining game with the way both of these teams are playing right now. The Ducks, coming off a 3-2 loss in Vancouver on Wednesday night with a heated finish that couldn’t hit my over, have played decent as of late. Although they have jut two wins in their last six games, they’ve gone 9-4-1 in their last 14. The Blues have been hot lately too, hanging onto Brayden Schenn and a few other players rumored to move at the deadline. Coming off a 3-2 shootout win in LA on Wednesday (loser for me), they’ve gone 6-1-1 in their last eight games. St. Louis won the first game between these teams 6-2 at home in January. I like them to win again, which I’ll take for half a unit, along with half a unit on the over.
