Tonight with some great goaltending from UPL, highlight reel goals from Tage Thompson, and a bit of luck, the Sabres ended the six game losing streak with a surprising 3-2 win at home against the Oilers.
Edmonton looked like the better team early, getting some great chances, but the Sabres looked decent enough hanging in there. The Sabres surprisingly got on the board first tonight with 6:32 left in the first period. Stuart Skinner made the initial save on Tage Thompson, but misplayed it, leading to Tage chasing his own rebound and making it 1-0 Buffalo. The Oilers were still the better team in that period, hitting a handful of pipes and getting some really good scoring chances, but regardless, we have the lead after 20 minutes.
After a brief delay to fix the boards on the Zamboni door, the Oilers came out on fire and were awarded on a screen slap shot from Darnell Nurse from the point getting Edmonton on the board 1:35 into the second, on a shot that UPL didn’t have any chance of saving. The Sabres took the lead back 3:52 into the period, on a nice perfectly placed shot by Alex Tuch to make it 2-1 Sabres. Edmonton tied it back up on a beautiful play on the power play, with Draisiatl winning the draw, getting it over to Connor, who faked it just to feed Bouchard on a one time rip into the back of the net. Pretty entertaining period as we go into the third tied up at 2.
Tage Thompson gave Buffalo the lead for the third time tonight, on a perfect play for a backhand toe drag right in front to put the Sabres up 3-1 on an absolute highlight film goal. The Oilers weren’t able to tie up the game with a late push, giving the Sabres a 3-2 win.
FINAL: Sabres 3, Oilers 2
Solid, surprising win for the Sabres. UPL kept us in this game early, making 32 saves as we were outshot 34-23, and with some clutch goals at the right time, in highlight reel fashion, we get the win. Solid way to end the six game losing streak.
Back at it Wednesday night in Detroit before Jack Eichel and Vegas come to town for a matinee on Saturday.
