Sabres @ Flyers: 3/29/25 – Game Reactions/Recap

This afternoon the Sabres started slow and fell apart late in Philly, losing 7-4 on the road to the Flyers in a relatively entertaining battle between the two worst teams in the East.

The Flyers got on the board first, with Matvei Michkov going on a two on one with Travis Konecny against Jacob Bryson, who took away the pass the right way, and Michkov ripped the puck past UPL, 5:27 into the game. Just 29 seconds later, Philly made it 2-0 on a beautiful pass from Owen Tippett to setup Jakob Pelletier. The Sabres made it 2-1 with 9:03 left in the first, with some nice work on the wall by JJ Peterka setting up Jack Quinn in the slot. Bad start to this game, but the Sabres improved a bit as the period went on. Still not great though, especially against a pretty lousy team, as Philly was definitely the better team through 20 minutes.

Buffalo looked good early in the second and 1:41 into the period, JJ Peterka got in the perfect spot by the crease for a tip in goal off a pass from Jack Quinn to tie it up 2-2. The Sabres took the 3-2 lead with 11:47 left in the second, with Jack Quinn scoring his second of the game on the power play from the slot, getting set up on a drop pass from Ryan McLeod. Philly tied the game with 9:24 left to go, on Matvei Michkov’s second goal of the game, a beautiful top shelf backhand, cashing my over early. Noah Cates, who led to Torts getting fired, took the lead back from the Flyers on a little two on from the boards to the net, making it 4-3 Flyers with 5:49 left in the second. What looked good to start the second period fell apart as the second continued, but it was a fun period of hockey to watch, with plenty of scoring chances for both teams.

With 13:21 left in regulation, the Flyers took a two goal lead with a rip from Owen Tippett on the power play from the top of the slot. Tyson Foerster made it 6-3 on a blast on the zone entry off a simple drop pass to make this an even more pathetic game for the Sabres. Alex Tuch picked up yet another shorthanded goal, his fourth of the season on a nice play in transition to make it a 6-4 game on a really clean play with 4:55 left in the third period. Philly answered right back though, just 29 seconds later, Ryan Poehling getting set up on a good cross ice play by Noah Cates right in the slot on the power play, making it 7-4.

Final: Sabres 4, Flyers 7

Pathetic loss for Buffalo today in what was actually a pretty fun game.
