This afternoon the Sabres followed up yesterday’s pathetic 7-3 loss to the Flyers with a huge 8-5 win on the road to the Capitals, in impressive fashion.
After some great chances, the Capitals got on the board first with Jakob Chychrun opening the scoring, 10:06 into this afternoon’s game on a rip of a shot that Reimer made the initial save on, but the puck trickled past the goal line to put Washington up 1-0. The Sabres tied up the game on the power play with 7:11 left, on a Tage Thompson shot up close and over Logan Thompson’s shoulder. Not to bad of a period for the Sabres, but the Caps were absolutely the better team.
The Sabres took the lead on a delayed penalty 2:14 into the second period on a really nice goal from Ryan McLeod right in front of the net on a fast zone entry in impressive fashion. The Caps answered right back though just 43 seconds later on a nicely place shot short side from Chychrun for his second goal of the game. Buffalo took the lead right back 5:17 into the period, with a tip in from Alex Tuch and a shot from the point by Connor Clifton. Sam Lafferty on a nice backhand goal made it 4-2 Sabres on a good little move in the slot on a zone entry with 8:08 left to go into the second, at least a push on my over for this game. Really good second period for Buffalo to get the two goal lead on the road to go into the third period.
The Caps opened the scoring very early in the third to get back within one with Aleksei Protas getting out on a breakaway just 37 seconds into the period, sliding the puck five hole past Reimer, shorthanded. Nice to hit my over that early into the second. Tage Thompson answered back though to make it 5-3 Buffalo on his second of the game, 1:28 into the third, with Logan Thompson getting a piece of the puck, but not enough to make the stop. Jack Quinn added to the lead with a very clean breakaway all the way down the ice to make it 6-3 Sabres with 14:08 left to go. The GR8 made it 6-4 as Alex Ovechkin got himself to five away from Wayne Gretzky’s record with a nice redirection past Reimer with 9:11 left in the third. Washington made it 6-5, as Pierre-Luc Dubois got the Caps within one, deflecting in a blast by Ovechkin from the point with 5:57 left to go. With just 4:26 left in the game, Alex Tuch made it 7-5 with his second of the game, with a slight top on a Samuelsson shot. Peyton Krebs locked the game up with 23 seconds to go on a diving empty netter to end it.
FINAL: Sabres 8, Capitals 5
Shocking win for Buffalo today, putting up eight goals on just 23 shots in a game on the road against the best team in the East. I guess that’s the beauty of the NHL, any team can win on any given night. Impressive. Whenever this team puts up these huge performances though it also pisses me off that so many nights they just look pathetic and uninspired like they did yesterday getting dominated by a shitty team like the Flyers. There’s just no consistency.
PS: Also very glad Ovi scored.
