I haven’t been able to blog the last handful of Sabres games, but have watched them, both happy that they’re playing well but pissed that they’re doing it so late in the season while they’re already eliminated from the playoffs. Tonight in Columbus, the Sabres fells short, losing 3-2 to end a five game win streak in a pretty good game.
The Sabres opened the scoring with 8:06 left in the first period, on a nice rip in transition from JJ Peterka to make it 1-0. Dahlin made it 2-0 not to long after, with 5:21 left in the first with some nice team effort getting chaos in front and getting awarded with the goal. The Jackets got on the board with 8.1 seconds left in the first as JvR got a breakaway and beat Reimer five hole to put them back within one. I thought the Sabres played solid hockey and were definitely the better team through the period, but that stung to give up that goal (not that badly though since I have the over).
Both teams had plenty of chances to score in the second period, especially the Sabres who generated 18 shots in that second period, but through 40 minute the game remained 2-1 Buffalo.
The cannon went off for Columbus exactly four minutes into the third period on a top shelf goal by Zach Aston-Reese on a beautiful rip to tie the game up at 2-2. Boone Jenner gave the Jackets their first lead of the game, scoring on the power play staying with a few rebounds and beating Reimer to go up 3-2 with 13:18 left in the third. The Sabres pushed hard late to try to tie it up, but fell short (along with what probably should have been a penalty to Columbus in the closing seconds as the stick was slashed out of Dahlin’s hands), losing 3-2.
FINAL: Sabres 2, Blue Jackets 3
Pretty good game. Disappointed my over didn’t hit. I thought the Sabres played well tonight and it just didn’t go their way with a few little errors in the third to fall apart and take the loss.
