With just one game left in the regular season after today, the Sabres got shut out 4-0 to get swept on the season by the Maple Leafs in a pretty boring game at home tonight.
The first period was scoreless, but I thought the Sabres played pretty well through that first 20 minutes on both ends of the ice. They generated some solid chance offensively, and UPL made some great saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Leafs got the first goal of the game as Steven Lorentz ripped a one timer past Luukkonen to make it 1-0 with 5:45 left in the second period. Toronto picked up the pace in that second period and definitely were the better team, getting awarded with the goal.
With 4:21 left in the game, Mitch Marner made it 2-0, getting right in front of the net for a beautiful setup by Matthews. Auston Matthews locked up the Atlantic Division for the Leafs with an empty netter with 1:52 left in the game. Nick Robertson got behind the Sabres defense, beat UPL and made it 4-0 with 1:17 to go, making it even more of a pathetic loss as Toronto completes the season sweep against us.
FINAL: Sabres 0, Maple Leafs 4
Pretty boring game that I thought we didn’t play terrible in. The Lorentz goal was a bad one to give up defensively, and the Robertson breakaway late, but I thought we were okay as Stolarz shut us out. At this point who gives a shit.
We close this terrible season on Thursday night with the Flyers coming to town for a meaningless game. I’ll have my state of the franchise rant yelling about how Pegula should sell the team after that one.
