I absolutely loved the first season of The Golden Bachelor and then The Golden Bachelorette lived right up to it and was fantastic. I think the connections that these people make at the age of these shows is so much more mature and there for the right reasons vs. the younger casts of the main shows. There’s barely any drama for the goldens and they’re all genuinely there for the right reasons. I love watching it. Warms my heart.
Now we get season two as former NFL player Mel Owens, as the second Golden Bachelor, with 23 women fighting for his heart. This season did get quite a bit of drama before it even started, when on some interview Mel said that he wanted a younger woman and would just send home anyone that was too old. Not great when the show’s literally called the Golden Bachelor. Online people got all pissed about it. I was kinda neutral on it. So we’ll see how this goes. Hopefully it just doesn’t matter and just lives up to last season.
Margarita’s poured, let the journey begin!
We get right into it though, with Mel immediately talking about saying he was looking for a woman between 45 and 60 on a podcast. That contrasts with the woman talking about it. And these ladies are GORGEOUS! Mel says he regretted it, was wrong, and apologizes, saying what a lot of people are thinking of him is not who he is.
After going through his life, Mel talks about that his father died in 2020 and pretty soon after his wife divorced him after cheating on him. This guy does seem easy to root for. Seems like a good dude.
Let the journey begin!
This cast of ladies seems fantastic!
The first thing Mel addresses to all the ladies once they’re all out of the limo is that age is just a number. Good for him to do.
Cindy, who was the first lady out of the limo, is the first one that Mel talks to and I think she’s my favorite. It’s cool already seeing the conversations that these ladies have with Mel. A lot of the discussion is around how Mel connects with the moms about their kids. Cheryl, the lady that rode in on a dirt bike seems like a blast as well.
Gerri, who had the biggest connection about their families and their kids and not doing anything for themselves for a long time, makes the best first impression to Mel, and he gives her the first impression rose.
Time for the first rose ceremony with six woman going home. The first rose goes to Peg, the bomb technician that seemed fun. With the final rose of the evening, Mel gives the rose to Debbie, a lady that’s never been married.
Cheryl, the lady that came in riding a dirt bike gets the first one on one date. She starts with a little outfit choice picking a dress and jewelry to wear on the date. She gets very emotional about it and loves it. And she looks stunning and seems like a blast too. Cheryl’s story about her ex-husband is very sad. It’s a lot. But she shows to Mel how strong she is. Mel of course gives her the rose.
Great song choice there too with Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.
The group date, as anyone could’ve guessed for a former football player. The date’s at LA Coliseum with a cheerleading date led by Paula Abdul and the Rams cheerleaders. The ladies are split into teams for a cheer competition. The winning team gets to spend more time with Mel in a suite at the stadium. Mel shows Cindy, the first woman out of the limo a video of her daughter, they clearly have a very strong connection, and Mel gives her the group date rose. She’s easily my favorite of this cast.
The next day’s a pool party.
They really cranked up the music budget on this season. Snow Patrol and the Miley Cyrus version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Damn.
We get our first bit of drama of the season, with this girl Nicole, who’s done nothing but hug and kiss Mel all episode, with zero conversation, jumping in the pool to kiss Mel in front of all the rest of the ladies, who aren’t thrilled to see it.
Next rose ceremony with four more going home. With the final rose of the evening, Mel gives it to Terri.
This season should be fantastic again.
