Not my best slate of day games in the NHL yesterday, going 3-4 to lose 2.07 units. Hasn’t been a great first week of the season. Let’s turn it around on this eight game slate tonight.
Maple Leafs vs. Predators (7:00)
This game isn’t great, but with the starts these teams have, it makes this early season matchup kind of interesting. The Leafs looked great in their opener, but looked awful losing both games of their home and home with Detroit. The Preds aren’t great but 2-0-1 to start the season. I like the Leafs to win this one at home and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the over.
Canadiens vs. Kraken (7:00)
These teams are both off to decent starts to the year, but I think the Habs are the much better team in this matchup. I don’t see Seattle contending for a playoff spot. I’ll take Montreal at home for half a unit. The total’s a toss up to me, but I’d very slightly lean the under.
Rangers vs. Oilers (7:00)
This is actually a decent matchup. I don’t think the Rangers are a good team, with their wins coming against two lousy teams (Pittsburgh, who they lost to before that, and my shitty Buffalo Sabres). But Igor Shesterkin is going to keep them in a lot of games. The Oilers are still a very solid team, that I still don’t think have quite enough to win the Cup. I like Edmonton to win this one on the road and I’ll take them for half a unit. With the total at 5.5, I think it’s a toss up. I’d like the under at 6.5, but I’ll lay off the total.
Capitals vs. Lightning (7:00)
Really solid matchup here between two good teams that I expect to both make the playoffs. The Caps are off to a good start, bouncing back nicely with wins on the road to the Rangers and Isles after losing at home to the Bruins in their opener. The Lightning bounced back yesterday from their two losses to start the year at home, not really impressing me much through three games. This game’s a complete toss up to me. I think Tampa’s the better team, but in the second half of a back to back on the road, that doesn’t instill enough confidence in me to bet them. I’d also lean the over, but the best play on this game is staying off it entirely.
Flames vs. Golden Knights (9:00)
Not the best game in the Pacific despite both of these teams only having one win so far through their first three games. The Golden Knights are the far better team in this matchup and I like them to win on the road. I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Stars vs. Wild (9:30)
I think this game is far better than the line on it makes it look. Both of these Central Division teams I think make the playoffs here. Dallas is definitely the better team here in my eyes, but not enough for them to be -192 favorites. That’s far too pricey. If it was around -150, I’d probably take the Stars here, but not at that price. I’d lean the under, but not enough to bet it so I’ll stay off this game completely.
Sharks vs. Hurricanes (10:00)
Big cross conference mismatch. The Sharks have improved and I think they’re on the right direction up, but not a chance they’re making the playoffs this year. They’ve looked decent in their two OT losses to start the season. The Canes are easily the favorite to win the Metro, and have been solid in their 2-0 start (although they fucked me by needing overtime against the Flyers). I like Carolina to win here pretty easily on the road tonight and I’ll take them in regulation for half a unit. I’d lean the over very slightly.
Ducks vs. Penguins (10:30)
Pretty terrible cross conference matchup to end the night. Both of these teams have looked decent enough in their starts to the year, but I don’t think either are making playoffs, or really even contending for it. This game’s a toss up to me. I’d slightly lean the over, but at 6.5, I can’t bet it this early in the season.
