Tonight the Sabres played great at home in the black and red, beating the Leafs 5-3 for our fourth win in our last five games.
The Sabres got on the board first on a shot from Mattias Samuelsson of a great zone entry by Alex Tuch and a nice pass from McLeod to an open Samuelsson in the slot, just 4:38 into the game. The Leafs answered right back though 23 seconds later, with William Nylander sneaking the puck through Lyon on a breakaway. A couple minutes later, 6:12 into the period, Jiri Kulich gave the Sabres the lead back on the rush on a nice passing play on the rush to make it 2-1 Buffalo. Auston Matthews tied it up again at 2 with Tage Thompson in the box with 7:15 left in the first, on a great one timer right above the red line off a pass from John Tavares (who’s uncle’s #11 is in the rafters of Buffalo). Really fun first period. I thought the Sabres looked good early, but the Leafs took over later.
ESPN’s hockey broadcasts are so fucking bad. It’s insane how night and day them and TNT are.
Tage Thompson gave the Sabres the lead back 7:20 into the second period on a nice wrist shot in the slot, in transition on a give and go with Bowen Byram. Mattias Samuelsson made it 4-2 on his second goal of the game with 6:50 left in the second, on a beautifully placed shot from the circle while he was left completely open.
The Leafs got back within one on a Dakota Joshua putting in a rebound past Lyon 1:55 into the third. Shorthanded after a great scoring chance for the Leafs, Alex Tuch gave the Sabres a huge insurance goal, making it 5-3 on a nice deke in front with 3:01 left in regulation. That capped it off for the win.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Maple Leafs 3
Solid win for the Sabres!
Are we back?
Back at it again tomorrow night for the second half of this back to back home and home up in Toronto to lead into Game 2 of the World Series.
