For the third game in a row, the Sabres lost in overtime tonight, falling 4-3 to the Bruins in yet another game that I thought we played well but couldn’t get the job done.
The Sabres looked good early, definitely looking like the better team on both ends of the ice than Boston did. The Bruins couldn’t even get a shot on goal or scoring chance on an early power play, with a great kill for Buffalo. Boston didn’t get their first shot till 9:42 into the game, with Buffalo outshooting them 8-1 at that point of the game. The Bruins were the ones to get on the board first through, on the power play on a quick shot far side, top shelf on Lyon from Morgan Geekie, in transition off a great pass by David Pastrnak. Boston made it 2-0 with 4:53 left in the first, with a very nice individual effort by David Pastrnak, causing a turnover in the Boston zone, carrying it up the ice on a two on one, faking a pass and shooting it past Lyon. That turned into a lousy period. I thought we played good early on, but the penalties and careless efforts defensively screwed us to go down 2-0 through the first period.
Buffalo finally got on the board with 3:59 left in the second period, with Rasmus Dahlin ripping a shot from the point on the power play to make it 2-1 on a screened shot past Korpisalo, on our 24th shot of the game. Boston answered back with 20.6 seconds to go, with Lyon making the initial save on Tanner Jeannot, but letting the puck squeak past him for Mark Kastelic to tip into the open net behind Lyon. Not a great period there for the Sabres.
With 13 minutes left in regulation, Josh Doan got the Sabres back within one, knocking the puck out of the air on a rebound and putting it in the back of the net in transition to make it 3-2. With 5:33 to go, the Sabres tied up the game on a great give and go off the face-off to cash my over on an Alex Tuch goal wide open in front. The goal was challenged for goaltender interference. It was determined to be a good goal, giving the Sabres a power play to try to take our first lead of the game, but we didn’t capitalize on it.
The Bruins were the better team, pretty much having the puck all of overtime, and won it in OT with a Dahlin turnover leading to a 3 on 1 and Khusnutdinov (who I never heard of) ended 2:07 into overtime.
FINAL: Sabres 3, Bruins 4 (OT)
Third straight overtime loss for Buffalo (at least I hit the over, despite losing on the Sabres ML). Once again I thought we played good, and actually were the better team. We out-chanced Boston 24-11 and outshot them 40-22, but couldn’t solve Korpisalo and made some terrible turnovers and careless mistakes that led to the loss.
We’re too good to get Gavin McKenna and we’re too bad to make the playoffs. This fucking team. Same old Sabres.
