Tonight the Sabres played another fun game, going to overtime for the fifth game in a row, but still ultimately losing 2-1 in OT, getting outworked by the Mammoth with Alex Lyon keeping he game tight with a great game in goal.
The first period was entertaining to watch despite being kind of sloppy for both teams, but both getting some decent chances. The Sabres had a couple beautiful chances, just not able to put the puck in the back of the net. Chance after chance to score, and just couldn’t do it. That was a really fun period of hockey to watch, despite being scoreless. Both Lyon and Vejmelka looked great in goal.
The fantastic goaltending continued into the second period. Both teams kept pouring it on. Another quick moving, fun period to watch, but Utah was absolutely the better team in that period, with Alex Lyon keeping this game scoreless through two.
The Mammoth finally scored the first goal of the game with Nick Schmaltz scoring in transition on the rush, beating Lyon just below the glove, 3:58 into the third period. The Sabres finally got on the board with 12:10 left in the game, with Noah Ostlund tipping the rebound in the back of the net in the midst of chaos in front to tie it up at 1-1 on the first goal of his NHL career. With that, onto overtime.
The Sabres had a nice chance early in OT, but the better team tonight won, with Clayton Keller getting past the Sabres and beating Lyon five hole 47 into overtime to get the 2-1 win for Utah.
FINAL: Sabres 1, Mammoth 2 (OT)
This game was a ton of fun to watch, but the clearly better team through this game got the win. We got outshot 34-18, and out-chanced 23-14. Alex Lyon was the only reason that this game was as close as it was and got to overtime. He was incredible between the pipes tonight. But to me, this game showed that the Sabres are still a step behind from being a playoff team.
