I had a slight losing day yesterday on the NHL, going 3-3 to lose 0.48 units. Tonight we have a solid five game slate. Let’s bounce back!
Maple Leafs vs. Mammoth (7:00)
This should be a fun cross conference matchup. The Leafs have seemingly solved their early season issues, coming into tonight’s game with four wins in their last five games to improve to 7-5-1 on the year. They erased a 3-0 third period deficit with four unanswered goals in the third to beat the Penguins 4-3 on Monday night to hit my over in that game. Utah’s been shockingly good this year. They’re 9-4 on the year, playing fun hockey and have been very sound on both ends of the ice. The Mammoth are in the second half of a back to back tonight. Last night in a pretty fun game, they couldn’t solve Alex Lyon all game, but the better team ultimately won with Clayton Keller scoring the overtime game winner to get them the 2-1 win in Buffalo last night. I’d lean with Utah in the second half of a back to back, that Toronto wins this one tonight, but I don’t like it enough to bet on. I do like the over though, which I’ll take for half a unit.
Capitals vs. Blues (7:30)
This cross conference matchup isn’t great, with both of these teams sitting at the bottom of their divisions. The Capitals haven’t been great lately, on a four game losing streak, coming off a 4-3 shootout loss in Buffalo on Saturday night to drop to 6-5-1 on the season. Their defense has been very good, but the offense hasn’t produced at all. The Blues have been awful, with just a 4-7-2 record. They ended a seven game losing streak on Monday night with a 3-2 win at home against the Oilers, in a game I’m glad I stayed off. I like Washington to win this one at home and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the under, but not enough to bet it.
Flames vs. Blue Jackets (9:30)
Horrible cross conference matchup. The Flames are the worst team in the NHL this year with just a 3-9-2 record, playing bad on both ends of the ice. They ended a three game losing streak on Sunday with a 2-1 win in Philly, just their second win since opening night. The Blue Jackets are coming off a 3-2 loss on Long Island on Sunday, ending a four game win streak, but they’ve been solid with a 7-5 record. Calgary is an auto-fade for me, and I’ll take the Jackets to win here on the road as an underdog. I’d lean the over, but don’t like it enough to bet on.
Canucks vs. Blackhawks (10:00)
Not a great Western Conference matchup, but I could see this being a fun game. The first game between these teams was close, with the Canucks winning 3-2 in a shootout on the road a few weeks ago. Vancouver’s 7-7 on the season, with three wins in their last five games, coming off a 5-4 overtime win on the road in Nashville on Monday night. The Blackhawks have exceeded my expectations in their start to the year, but come into tonight on a three game losing streak off a 3-1 loss in Seattle on Monday, dropping to 5-5-3 on the season. I’d lean the Canucks win this one at home, and I’d slightly lean the over, but don’t like either enough to bet on, so I’ll lay off this game entirely.
Kraken vs. Sharks (10:00)
Kind of a boring Pacific Division matchup to end the night. The Kraken have played well in their 6-2-4 start, playing great defense despite their unimpressive offense. They’re on a five game point streak, coming off a 3-1 win at home against the Blackhawks on Monday. The Sharks are playing better, and their young stars in Celebrini and Smith have been a lot of fun to watch. Coming off a 3-2 shootout loss at home against the Red Wings on Sunday after two wins in a row, they’re now 4-6-3 on the year. Seattle’s defense should win them this game at home tonight and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d slightly lean the over, but don’t see any edge in betting it.
