In a really fun game in Detroit tonight, erasing a 4-1 deficit going into the third period, the Sabres went on to win 5-4 in overtime for their first road win of the season!
The Red Wings scored the first of the game, 10:23 into the game, with Buffalo native Patty Kane lighting the lamp as Ben Chariot got a bad turnover from the Sabres and put it in front for Kaner to tip in the empty net. The Sabres tied it right up 29 seconds later, with some chaos in front and Gibson not being able to cover the lose puck, leading to Alex Tuch putting it past the goal line. Despite the shots only being 6-5, I thought that was an entertaining, pretty evenly played period through 20 minutes.
Detroit took a 2-1 lead 3:52 into the second period on a nice play in front on a second effort of his own shot by Alex DeBrincat. They made it 3-1 not long later with Dylan Larkin scoring on a four on four, getting right in front and elevating the puck top shelf right over Ellis. The Red Wings added to their lead on the power play, making it a 4-1 game 8:50 into the second, with a pass through the crease from DeBrincat making the puck go off Samuelsson’s stick and in the net, and as much as I’d like to blame that on Samuelsson, Patty Kane was putting the puck in the net anyway if it hadn’t. The Sabres got back within two, with a rocket from the blue line from Rasmus Dahlin, who rejoined the team tonight, going off Josh Doan and into the net to make it 4-2 with 2:02 left in the second period. Game kinda fell apart through that second period.
Tage Thompson got the Sabres back within one, flying around DeBrincat and right to the net, going around Gibson to make it a 4-3 game with 15:35 left in regulation. Ryan McLeod tied up the game with 10:32 left in regulation, making it 4-4 as he stripped the puck and went on a breakaway, shorthanded for a quick, nicely placed shot beating Gibson. Great third period for Buffalo to take this game from overtime and erase that 4-1 hole going into the third.
Mattias Samuelsson ended it 1:03 into overtime, giving the Sabres their first win outside of KeyBank Center of the season in an electric game.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Red Wings 4 (OT)
Really fun game to watch. The Sabres started off looking slow through the first two periods of this game, playing especially bad in the second period digging themselves into a 4-1 deficit, but they played great in the third period to erase that and come back to force overtime, and then win it! Great win on the road.
I’m fine with losing a half unit bet on that kind of comeback any day!
