Last night the Sabres played horrendous hockey coming off two nice wins, losing 6-2 at home to the worst place Calgary Flames, who were in the second half of a back to back.
The Sabres looked awful early, not even getting a zone entry on a power play and then Calgary jumped on a bad rebound as Rasmus Andersson made it 1-0 just 5:58 into the game. With 7:56 left, the Sabres gave up a horrendous goal to Joel Farabee from the red line on an awful angle that should’ve never even gotten to the net, let alone squeaked in the net past Ellis. With 5:26 to go in the period, the Sabres got on the board to make it 2-1 on a nice shot by Dahlin from the left circle. Calgary challenged it for goaltender interference, it was determined there was, which was bullshit, taking the goal off the board. Awful period for Buffalo, playing in terrible hockey on both ends of the ice, barely sustaining any time in Calgary’s zone as we got outshot 11-5.
The Sabres made it 2-1 with 9:39 left in the second period, getting our first goal from Mattias Samuelsson in the slot on really the first good possession of the game. Buffalo tied it up with a rip from Tage Thompson from the point on a beautiful shot with 4:03 left in the second period. Still a pretty bad period for us, but nice to tie up.
We Flames took the lead back on another bad goal by Morgan Forst, set up nicely by Jonathan Huberdeau, 2:02 into the third. Garbage goal to give up from the Sabres defense and bad goaltending. The Flames added to their lead 7:34 into the third, as Mikael Backlund made it 4-2. Farabee made it 5-2 on his second of the game with 10:10 left in the game, essentially ending the game with how lousy we looked tonight. On a horrendous goal by Utah 2:12 left, Matt Coronato made it 6-2 with the puck going off the back wall and in. This team’s so fucking pathetic.
FINAL: Sabres 2, Flames 6
What an awful game. We couldn’t even sustain the zone to generate offense all night. The defense was non-existent and Colton Ellis was awful in goal. The first period was horrible, not generating anything and giving up bad goals. The second at least showed a decent, yet a little bit lucky comeback effort, and then everything completely fell apart in the third to the point. Terrible, against the worst team in the league.
