Today the Sabres got shut out 5-0 in a matinee at home by the Devils, but actually did play much better than that final score showed.
Tage Thompson got the game going early, in a way I wouldn’t expect, getting into a fight and throwing em less than three minutes into the game. The Devils got on the board first with the puck going down low right to Nico Hischier in the crease, with Lyon not having any idea where the puck was and Buffalo’s defense not doing a thing, leading to an easy goal with 7:53 left in the first. Pretty fast, fun first period with both teams getting some good scoring chances.
The Devils made it 2-0 with 12:15 left in the second, with poor defensive play by the Sabres leading to a quick shot by Arseny Gritsyuk beating Lyon on a quick shot in the slot. The Sabres played pretty well again in that period, getting plenty of solid opportunities, but not beating Jake Allen.
1:39 into the third period, Jersey made it a 3-0 game on a solid shot from Brenden Dillon, with the Sabres giving it away behind their own net and Dillon ripping a one timer from the top of the circle top shelf, far side past Lyon. Paul Cotter added to the NJ lead a few minutes later, coming in on a breakaway off the bench and cashing in. With 3:11 left in the game, Gritsyuk scored his second goal of the game, cashing in on transition on a nice two on one after a good scoring chance for the Sabres, closing it out for a 5-0 Devils win.
FINAL: Sabres 0, Devils 5
I thought the Sabres actually played way better than getting shut out 5-0 looks like, especially through the first two periods, they just couldn’t solve Jake Allen. Buffalo generated 42 shots on goal tonight and Allen was perfect between the pipes for Jersey. The Sabres defense I thought was pretty bad, but the offense had a ton of quality chances and just couldn’t put the puck past the goal line.
