Yesterday with the Ducks blowing a 3-0 first period lead and the Canes needing OT, I went 4-3 on the NHL, yet lost 0.42 units. Let’s kick off December with some wins!
Devils vs. Blue Jackets (7:00)
Not the greatest matchup to start the night in the Metro Division. The Devils have been very good this season with a 16-8-1 record and they’re an impressive 9-1-1 at home. They had a three game win streak end on Saturday, losing 5-3 at home to the Flyers (loss for me there). They’ve played well on both ends of the ice. The Blue Jackets are struggling, coming into tonight with four straight losses, three of them in overtime, to drop to 11-9-5 on the season as they struggled on both ends of the ice. In the first meeting between these teams in the first week of the season, the Devils won 3-2 on the road. I like them to win again here tonight at home and I’ll take them for a unit in a decent bounce back spot. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Flyers vs. Penguins (7:00)
This Pennsylvania rivalry is always fun and both of these Metro Division teams are playing pretty decent hockey so far this season, setting up a pretty good game. The Flyers are a solid 14-7-3 on the season, exceeding my expectations. Their offense hasn’t been all that great on the year, but they’re clicking right now, on a three game win streak coming off a 5-3 win in Jersey on Saturday, and they have five wins in their last six games. The Penguins are 12-7-5, getting blown out 7-2 at home by the Leafs after two wins in a row. They’ve been pretty good on both ends of the ice. The first game between these teams went to a shootout, with the Flyers winning 3-2 at home at the end of December. I’d lean Philly wins again here at home, and the under, but not enough to bet either. I considered betting Crosby to get a point, but the price over -200 is too expensive and there’s no one I really like enough in this matchup to parlay him with, so I’ll just stay off this game entirely.
Sabres vs. Jets (7:30)
Not the best cross conference matchup here. I don’t think my Sabres are a good team in the slightest, still sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference with a 10-11-4 record. They have won five of their last eight games though, bouncing back from two straight losses with a shocking 3-2 shootout win on the road in Minnesota on Saturday night. The Jets have been very good on both ends of the ice this season, but they’ve struggled since losing Connor Hellebuyck for probably another month. Winnipeg has just four wins in their last twelve games, ending a four game losing streak on Saturday with a 5-2 win on the road in Nashville. I like the Jets to win here on the road, and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it. I’ll also parlay Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor to each get a point for half a unit.
Blues vs. Ducks (8:00)
Pretty big mismatch here in the Western Conference. The Blues are coming off two wins in a row, coming off a 1-0 shutout win at home against the Mammoth on Saturday and have played better lately. They have just two wins in their last nine games, but have picked up a point in all but two of their last twelve games. They’re still a bad team though, struggling on both ends of the ice. The Ducks have been a bit inconsistent lately, but they’ve had a solid 15-9-1 start to the season. They’re in the second half of a back to back tonight, coming off blowing a 3-0 lead in the first 10:25 of the game including two goals in the first 47 seconds to go on to lose 5-3 in Chicago yesterday. Their defense hasn’t been great but the young core of their offense has been fantastic. Even in the second half of a back to back, I like Anaheim to win here on the road and I’ll take them for half a unit. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it. I like a player prop parlay here too, and I’ll take Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier, and Troy Terry to each get a point for half a unit.
Sharks vs. Mammoth (10:00)
This should be a pretty fun Western Conference matchup to end the night between two mid-tier 12-11-3 teams, which are both fun to watch this year. The Sharks are playing pretty well with ten wins in their last 16 games, coming off a 4-3 loss in Vegas on Saturday night. The Mammoth are struggling a bit as of late, on a three game losing streak, coming off a 1-0 shutout loss in St. Louis on Saturday, and they have just three wins in their last 13 games. These teams split their first two games this season, with the Mammoth winning 6-3 at home in October and the Sharks answered back with a 3-2 overtime win in November. I’d lean Utah gets the win here on the road, but don’t like it enough to bet on. I’d also lean the over, but not enough to bet that either, so I’ll lay off it. I do like Maclin Celebrini and Clayton Keller to each get a point here, which I’ll parlay for half a unit.
