Sabres @ Flyers: 12/3/25 – Game Reactions/Recap

Coming off two nice wins in a row, tonight the Sabres started hot but fell apart in the first period, giving up three goals in less than a minute to go on to lose 5-2 in Philly.

The Sabres got the first goal of the game, 4:08 into the first period, on the power play with Jason Zucker right in front of the net for a quick tap in set up by Josh Doan behind the net. Travis Konecny answered back for the Flyers with 11:34 left in the first, also on the power play on a nice shot with Ellis screened. Lindy challenged it for goaltender interference, which was a bit of a stretch to challenge and ended up being unsuccessful, sending Philly right back to the power play. Of course the Flyers cashed in on it, giving them a 2-1 lead on a goal from Trevor Zegras that got redirected off a Sabres defenseman’s shin and into the net with 10:56 left in the first. Just 21 seconds later, Philly cashed in again, jumping on a Sabres turnover in their own zone, with Bobby Brink getting an easy goal off a rebound right in front to make it a 3-1 game. Not great for the Sabres, giving up three goals in the span of 59 seconds. Decent start for Buffalo, but that fell apart really quick and Philly dominated the rest of the period after they gave up those three goals in a minute.

The Flyers added to their lead just 1:45 into the second period, making it 4-1 with Bobby Brink sliding the puck through the crease right as their power play ended for Noah Cates to tip easily into the net. The Sabres got some decent chances and got it going, and with 8:12 left in the second, Bowen Byram got the puck on a lucky bounce, and cashed in on it to make it 4-2. With 7:17 left in the period, the Flyers answered back, with a good second effort right in front by Owen Tippett to give Philly their three goal lead back, making the game 5-2. Decent period, and I thought the Sabres played better in it than they did in the first.

With 7:09 left in regulation, Zach Benson got the puck past the goal line on a nice little move in front following a rebound to get the Sabres back within two. Rick Tocchet challenged it for offsides on the zone entry (the dumbest rule in hockey), it was determined to be offsides, and wiped the goal off the board.

FINAL: Sabres 2, Flyers 5

This game was over as soon as we gave up those three goals in a minute. That drained everything out of the Sabres turning this into a terrible game quickly after the nice start.
