Tonight in a later game in Calgary, with a slow start but a really fun second period of hockey, the Sabres lost 7-4 in a pretty bad game between two lousy teams.
The Flames got on the board first tonight 9:56 into the game, with a shot from the point by MacKenzie Weeger getting redirected of Yegor Sharangovich’s arm and into the net. The refs looked at it a bit for yet another stupid review, but they pretty quickly called it a goal. The amount of these fucking reviews is getting insane in this league. With 6:38 left in the first, Rasmus Andersson made it 2-0 Flames with a rip of a slap shot that stayed low to beat UPL on a 5 on 3 power play, redirected from a deflection off Conor Timmins leg as he tried to block the shot. Lousy first period for the Sabres on both ends of the ice against another lousy team in Calgary.
Tage Thompson put the Sabres on the board 4:24 into the second period on the power play, with a beautiful shot from the circle, placed perfectly, top shelf where mama hides the cookies. The Flames answered back with a tip in from Jonathan Huberdeau as a 5 on 3 was expiring with 12:55 lectures in the second, with the puck getting a bad bounce off UPL’s slate and into the net. The Sabres got back within two less than a minute later, with Tage Thompson scoring his second of the game, on a low angle shot from the bottom of the circle in transition to beat Wolf. Calgary challenged it, determined it was offsides, taking he goal off the board. This shit is absolutely horrible for the game of hockey. GET RID OF OFFSIDES REVIEWS!!! Owen Power got the next goal though for Buffalo, with some really nice patience up top, finding a lane through a ton of traffic and beating Wolf to make it 3-2 with 6:17 left in the second period. Nazem Kadri answered right back about 30 seconds later, getting behind Owen Power and right to the crease for an easy tip in on a pass from Joel Farabee to give the Flames their two goal lead back and make it 4-2 Calgary. The Sabres got back within one again with 3:28 to go in the second with some nice passing in transition, for a backdoor tip in for Rasmus Dahlin. Like clockwork though, the Flames answered once again, with a tip in off a rebound by Yan Kuznetsov beating UPL. Horrible goal for Luukkonen to allow there, making it a 5-3 game. Really fun period to watch with so much action from both teams. Wouldn’t say it was a defense or goaltending clinic by any means though, clearly these are two bad teams.
Alex Lyon replaced UPL in goal for the third period, probably a good move by Lindy. At the end of quite the boring third period, the Sabres got back within a goal again with a very weird goal with two deflections into the net with 2:30 left in regulation. Backlund ended the game though on an empty netter with 1:48 left in the game. Sharangovich added another empty netter, and that’s all she wrote.
FINAL: Flames 7, Sabres 4
Pretty lousy game tonight on both ends of the ice for the Sabres. This was a relatively evenly played game after the slow start for Buffalo in the first period, and the second was a blast to watch, but besides that, shitty game.
On to Edmonton to lose again tomorrow night.
