Sabres @ Oilers: 12/9/25 – Game Reactions/Recap

Tonight the Sabres looked solid through 40 minutes, almost fell apart in Edmonton, blowing a 3-0 third period lead, but still picking up the 4-3 win against the Oilers in overtime.

Kind of a low event first period that was pretty evenly played to start it off. The Sabres got on the board first tonight, with Josh Doan scoring on the power play with 58.1 seconds left in the first, redirecting a shot from Rasmus Dahlin past Skinner to make it 1-0 Buffalo. We played pretty well in that first period, really in every facet of the game. We’ll see if that lasts through this game.

Tage Thompson made it 2-0 with 10:23 left in the second period, with a nice backhand tip in off a rebound after he made a solid play down low to get the puck. The Oilers challenged the goal for who the fuck knows what, they didn’t even say what the challenge was for on the broadcast, which is as fucking ridiculous as these have gotten. The ref came out of the box and announced that there was a missed stoppage, and that it was no goal. HOW IN THE FUCK do you take a goal off the board and not even say what the fucking missed stoppage is. Apparently it was for a missed hand pass, which is now the third time this has happened in the NHL in the past week, and it might be even more retarded that the fucking offsides reviews. This god damn league can’t stay out of their own fucking way. Tage got his goal back with 8:57 left in the second, stealing the puck from Bouchard behind the net, and having an easy one on one with Skinner in front of the net, making it 2-0 Sabres. 56 second later with Connor McDavid in the box, Josh Doan made in 3-0 on his second goal of the game, an absolute beauty as he in one motion put the puck between his legs in the crease and then into the net. Prettiest goal I’ve seen all year. Another very good period for Buffalo.

The Oilers captain, the best player in the world must’ve been pissed about losing to Buffalo, and just nine seconds into the third period, McDavid made a nice clean move with a beautiful solo effort, making Edmonton’s first goal of the game look easy as he made it a 3-1 game (and cashed my goal prop on him). Edmonton got back within one just 1:56 into the period, with a tip in by Podkolzin to make it 3-2. This game’s already falling apart. With exactly one second left, Connor McDavid pulled out his magic, tying the game on a rebound for an easy goal into the empty net to knot it up at 3-3 and send it to overtime (and cash my over).

Alex Tuch ended it though pretty quickly into overtime to finish the season sweep of the Oilers, sneaking by the Oilers defense, getting left all alone for a quick tap in to win it. Terrible defense for Edmonton there, but solid win for the Sabres.

FINAL: Sabres 4, Oilers 3 (OT)

The first 40 minutes of this game was fantastic for the Sabres. They played so well on both ends of the ice, but it all fell apart during that third period. The Oilers dominated the third with Connor McDavid going to another level to drag them back in. I thought for sure after they sent it to overtime with just a second left in regulation that Edmonton was winning this thing. Regardless, big win for the Sabres and I guess it was nice to complete the season sweep of the defending back to back Western Conference champs.

This team can’t even lose right (quite biased since I lost quite a bit on this game).
